Technical symposium

Cauvery College for Women won the overall trophy at VarIT-2K15, an inter-collegiate technical symposium, organised by the Department of Information Technology of Jamal Mohamed College. PRIST University, Thanjavur, bagged the second prize. More than 300 students from 30 colleges took part in the symposium, which was inaugurated by M.A. Maluk Mohamed, Principal, MAM College of Engineering.

A.K. Khaja Nazeemudeen, secretary and correspondent, Jamal Mohamed College, gave away the prizes.

Champions in fencing

Bharathidasan Institute of Technology emerged men’s team champion in the Anna University inter-zonal fencing tournament. It bagged the men’s team gold in epee event and team bronze in foil event. M. Arunprasad clinched individual bronze in epee event. In the women’s section, Bharathidasan Institute of Technology won team bronze in foil event.

Meet on teaching, learning

M.R. Lakshmi Narayana, associate professor, BES College of Education, Bangalore, inaugurated a conference on ‘new strategies for teaching, learning, and evaluation,’ organised at Oxford College of Education. Nirmala Subramaniam, secretary, Oxford College of Education, presided. K. Anandhan, Professor and Head, Department of Education, Centre for Distance Education, Bharathidasan University, spoke on digital resources in classroom instruction.

D. Srinivas Kumar, Dean, School of Education, Department of Education and HRD, Dravidian University, spoke on strategies for making learning as a joyful venture and Charles R. William, associate professor, Government College of Education, Pudukottai, spoke on the role of rubrics in evaluation.

Awareness programme

The placement cell of J.J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai, organised an awareness programme on job prospects in the banking sector. Balasubramanian, AGM, State Bank of India, zonal office, Tiruchi, C.R. Krishnamoorthy, former Regional Manager, Standard Chartered Bank, Chennai, and S. Subbiah, former Chief Manager, SBI, Chennai, were the resource persons. Underlining the importance of employability skills in addition to academic proficiency, the resource persons said the banking sector offered vast scope to aspiring youngsters who have adequate computational skills and the right attitude towards group dynamics. Banking has emerged as a highly competitive field and good inter-personal skills are paramount for success, they said.

Seminar

An UGC-sponsored seminar on ‘techniques and applications of food processing,’ was organised by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College. A. Sangeetha, Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Jamal Mohammed College, spoke on cereal processing. M. Mayil Vahanan, senior scientist (Plant Biochemistry), National Research Centre for Banana, Tiruchi, spoke on ‘banana: nutrition and bio fortification.’ M. Jayanthi, Principal, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, and L. Jayaprada, Head, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, were present.

National Youth Day

The Youth Red Cross and NSS of Saranathan College of Engineering celebrated National Youth Day. A. Revathi, principal, inaugurated ‘swachh bharat abhiyan’ at the college. About 100 students participated.

Workshop

The Centre for High Pressure Research, School of Physics, Bharathidasan University, organised a workshop on Strongly Correlated Materials. It focused providing a platform for scientists, young researchers and students to know the importance and developments in various strongly correlated materials.

P.P. Chandrachoodan, former programme officer, Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, Mumbai, said students should strive to achieve technological development on materials based research for advancement of society. M. Ravichandran, Registrar of Bharathidasan University, presided. K. Kumarasamy, Head, Department of Geography, delivered the keynote address. S. Arumugam, Coordinator of the Centre for High Pressure Research, Bharathidasan University, spoke.
