Poisoned liquor kills four

: Four persons including a teacher died after consuming poisoned liquor at Ulagudayanpattu near Sankarapuram in Villupuram district on Saturday night.

Police are on the look-out for the accused, a post-graduate teacher, who had allegedly mixed poison in the liquor served to the victims during a treat. The victims have been identitifed as P.Panchatcharam (41) of Kallakurichi, S. Kangaraj(42), K. Moorthy(33), and A. Muniyan (58).

Sankarapuram police said Ramakrishnan, after completing his M.A and M.Phil, was running a tuition centre along with P.Panchatcharam, who had obtained M.A and M.Ed in Kallakurichi. He was in the habit of drinking alcohol in the company of his friends in his village. On Saturday night, he invited his friends to take liquor in his house, which he claimed to have bought from Puducherry.

According to village sources, following a drunken ruckus, Kanagaraj came out of the house. Noticing an abnormal condition of Kanagaraj, some of his relatives took him to the Government General Hospital, Kallakurichi where he was declared brought dead. The villagers, later, found three more persons lying at different spots. Ramakrishnan was absconding.

Following a complaint, Sankarapuram recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem.

V.Vikraman, Superintendent of Police of Villupuram, told The Hindu , “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of poisoning. We are looking out for Ramakrishnan. We recovered the bodies and sent them for post mortem. Special teams have been constituted to apprehend the accused.”

Police also recovered a bottle containing monocrotophos and syringe, and empty liquor bottles which contain pesticide. The reason for the poisoning would be known only after the accused was arrested.
