Congress campaign committee chief and Sadar Bazaar candidate Ajay Maken on Sunday toured his constituency on foot and quickly ran into voters who were at once lukewarm and seething.

The padyatra in the Anand Parbat area proceeded single file between dilapidated houses on lanes with open drains. Soon there was voter anger to deal with. Residents invited the former MP into their homes to show how sewage water was filling their living space. “Take a walk in our lanes and see for yourself,” said a voter walking along side Maken.

In a case of unfortunate timing, a child following Maken slipped into an open manhole. He was was pulled out immediately with help from the people around.

Residents also led Maken to the main road of the locality where they claimed, sewage flows all through the year.
“Twelve months a year, sewage flows down Anand Parbat, making it difficult to walk. The stench is unbearable,” Sujata the vocal voter said as she walked behind Maken.

Locals said they were upset over being “ignored” for 16 years and have been waiting for schools, hospitals and roads. “The nearest school is so far that we can’t let children go alone. Obviously the lanes are too narrow for even a rickshaw to pass by, so we have to go to the main road with the children to drop them and then to pick them up as well,” Nimmi, a resident said.

Festive offer

The pamphlets given out to the locals highlight Maken’s achievements, personal and as a former Member of Parliament and Union minister.

This seems essential, considering that he is a new candidate in the area. However, the pamphlets do not list a single point on the party’s plan for the area or its people.

Resident Kul Bhushan, said, “No one wants to walk these streets. It is the first time a candidate has entered the lanes. Earlier they would just go back from the main roads,” he said.

“The area falls under the notified slum area and is facing some critical problems including those of minimum basic services. I am planning for holistic development of this area beginning with adequate drinking water to be provided to the locals,” Maken said, blaming the AAP legislator Som Dutt for not taking up the issues of the residents of Anand Parbat.
