Lambert gets Padma Shri

PANAJI: Centenarian Lambert Mascarenhas, popular as a journalist, freedom activist and writer, has been awarded the Padmi Shri 2015 for literature and education.
Mascarenhas was awarded Goa’s highest civilian award - the Gomant Vibhushan - in September 2014.
Speaking to TOI, Mascarenhas said that he was very proud and honoured to be awarded the Padma Shri. “I never expected it. I don’t think I have done anything exceptional to deserve such a high award. But, I am grateful to the government of India for honouring me,” Mascarenhas said.
Mascarenhas was the first editor of the Navhind Times. Three years later, he successfully founded his own monthly magazine 'Goa Today'. Apart from that, Mascarenhas has also authored five books namely: The First City (published in 1943, Bombay), Sorrowing Lies My Land (published in 1955, Bombay), In The Womb of Saudade (published in 1994), The Greater Tragedy (1998) and lastly, Heartbreak Passage (2009). He also contributed to the liberation struggle of Goa
