Driving motorcycles without a helmet and after consuming alcohol is equal to ‘HELL-MET’ said one cartoon. Another cartoon had a tortoise—1,000 years’ life, carrying the message “wear helmet,” and yet another screamed “Hell on cell,” about using cellphones while driving.

These were some of the cartoons on exhibition at the Forum Fiza Mall, Pandeshwar, to mark the 26th National Road Safety Week. The exhibition has jointly been organised by the district administration, the Transport and Police Departments, the mall, Cartoonists Mangaluru and Nisarga Foundation.

Cartoons from across the State—Sathish Acharya, Prakash Shetty, Raghupati Sringeri, Harini, John Chandran, Udaya Vittla, Dinesh Kukkujadka, Chandra Gangolli, Jeevan Shetty, S.V. Padmanabha, G.S. Naganath and Yogish Shettigar are on display on the first floor of the mall, right next to the main entrance .

The exhibition is part of a campaign to create awareness among people about safe driving. The exhibition will be open till Monday evening at the mall for public view.

Drivers’ orientation

Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing road safety week, an orientation programme was organised. Speaking on the occasion, Bhujanga Shetty, who has been driving heavy vehicles for nearly three decades, observed that a lack of awareness about the responsibility of the person behind the wheels is one among the major causes for road mishaps.

Dakshina Kannada District Bus Operators’ Association president Nelson Pereira said that the association had been trying to inculcate good habits of driving. Inaugurating the programme, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Mangaluru, Uday Nayak urged the crew to strictly follow traffic rules.
