Ranji Trophy Round 7, Day 4: Purkayastha's 10-for sinks Goa

Swarupam Purkayastha continued to shine brightly for Assam by taking another 10-wicket haul in the match to help them beat Goa. On the other hand, Karnataka for the first time this season, struggled while facing up to their formidable foes, Baroda, before escaping with a draw. Here is a round up of Round 7 of matches in Ranji Trophy 2014-15.

Karnataka vs Baroda, Mysore

In what turned out to be an action packed encounter, where the fortunes of both the sides swung back and forth, it was Karnataka in the end, who were able to escape with a draw. On the last day, after Baroda were cleaned up for 254, Sagar Mangalorkar bowled with fire and aggression to take four wickets and give genuine hope for the visitors to upset the apple-cart and beat the defending champions in their own den. However, Shreyas Gopal yet again showed his unflappable temperament to amass 51 not out and take Karnataka to safe waters.

Brief scores: Baroda 335 and 254 (Deepak Hooda 67; Aravind 3/37) drew with Karnataka 302 and 153/7 (S Gopal 51*; Sagar Mangalorkar 4/54).

Railways vs Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi

In a game where rain played spoilsport, Railways gained the vital first innings lead by skittling out Jammu and Kashmir for a paltry score of 114. Anureet Singh took five wickets for them. Railways, had earlier made 234 for five declared, mainly on the back of Rahan Bhosale's fine innings of 54.

Brief scores: Railways 234/5 (d) and 18/0 drew with Jammu and Kashmir 114 (Obaid Haroon 32; Anureet Singh 5/48).

Uttar Pradesh vs Bengal, Ghaziabad

In a match, where bad weather conditions played havoc, only 57 overs could be bowled on Day 1. In those 57 overs, Bengal had made 141 for the loss of 4 wickets.

Brief Scores: Bengal 141/4 (S Chatterjee 60, Saha 45*, Kuldeep Yadav 2/58) drew with Uttar Pradesh.

Maharashtra vs Delhi, Pune

Shrikant Mundhe's gutsy effort of 104 helped Maharashtra to recover from a tricky position to end up with 366 on the board. Delhi in their second innings were 78 for 3 at stumps as the game eventually ended in a draw. Earlier, Swapnil Gugale had essayed a sparkling knock of 174 to take Maharashtra to 330 in their first innings. For Delhi, Gautam Gambhir's patient-vigil at the crease that lasted 222 balls had taken the visitors to 307 in reply.

Brief Scores: Maharashtra 330 and 366 (S Mundhe 104; Parvinder Awana 4/68) drew with Delhi 307 and 78 for 3 (M Manhas 25*; C Khurana 2/33).

Vidarbha vs Gujarat, Surat

Akshay Wakhare, the off-spinner, bowled a mettlesome spell of 7 for 70 to rip through the Gujarat batting line-up and help Vidarbha to emerge victorious by a margin of 120 runs. Parthiv Patel stood alone amidst the ruins for Gujarat with a fluent knock of 73 not out. Earlier, Shalab Shrivastava got a well deserved ton on day three as Vidarbha fought back superbly. Faiz Fazal supported him well with 75 as they reached 307 in their first innings. Gujarat were bowled out for a modest score of 248 in their first essay.

Brief Scores: Vidarbha 236 and 307 (S Shrivastava 101, R Powar 5/99) beat Gujarat 248 and 175 (Parthiv Patel 73*; Akshay Wakhare 7/70) by 120 runs.

Himachal Pradesh vs Andhra, Dharamsala

The game played between Himachal Pradesh and Andhra was also hampered by bad weather conditions. Andhra made 336 for 8 declared in their first essay. Himachal's batsmen struggled to come to grips with the visitors' bowling attack, before ending up with 186 for 7 at stumps. Rishi Dhawan showed his all-round skills for Himachal by notching up a fifty.

Brief Scores: Andhra Pradesh 336 for 8 (d) (Murumulla Sriram 105, AG Pradeep 50; V Malik 3/78) drew with Himachal Pradesh 186/7 (Rishi Dhawan 55*; P Vijaykumar 3/47).

Goa vs Assam, Goa

Purkayastha, the off-spinner, with his flight and guile continued to prove his worth in the domestic circuit by taking a 10-wicket haul in the game against Goa and help the visitors thrash the hosts by 10 wickets. Only Keenan Vaz down the order held fort for Goa by amassing 59. Among the batsmen, it was Tarjinder Singh, who played a gutsy knock of 104 not out to give Assam the vital first innings lead.

Brief Scores: Goa 175 and 268 (Keenan Vaz 59; Swarupam Purkayastha 6/76) lost to Assam 435/8 (d) and 12/0 (Arun Karthik 8*) by 10 wickets.

Jharkhand vs Hyderabad, Ranchi

The high-scoring game between Jharkhand and Hyderabad ended in a tame draw. If Ishan Jaggi's heart-warming double ton took Jharkhand to a monstrous score of 556 for 9 declared then Hyderabad reached 455 mainly on the back of Akshath Reddy and Ashish Reddy holding fort with tenacious tons. Jharkhand declared their second innings at 189 for 4 and Hyderabad at close of Day 4 were 7 for no loss.

Brief Scores: Jharkhand 556 for 9 (d) and 189 for 4 (d) (Ishan Kishan 84; Akash Bhandari 2/46) drew with Hyderabad 455 and 7/0.

Tripuara vs Kerala, Agartala

On the back of Bishal Ghosh's marathon innings of 82 off 266 balls and Nirupam Chowdhary's knock of 72, Tripura were able to draw their game against Kerala. In fact, at 176 for 7, the hosts were in all kinds of trouble, before steering their way towards safety. For the home team, Amit Verma took a five-wicket haul.

Brief Scores: Tripura 179 and 295/9 (Bishal Ghosh 82, Nirupam Chodhary 72; Amit Verma 5 for 61) drew with Kerala 301/9 (d) (Abhishek Hegde 82, Rohan Prem 58; Rana Dutta 4/45).
