Four persons, including three school students, were killed and two others seriously injured in an accident on East Coast Road near Kulathur on Friday.

According to Superintendent of Police M. Durai, a motor-bike, in which all the six persons were travelling, collided with a sand-laden lorry.

Police said, C. Chandrasekar (35) of Anna Nagar Colony, Kulathur, one of the deceased, who was riding the two-wheeler carrying five students, including three of his children, from the school, lost control while turning right to enter the colony from the ECR and collided with the lorry. The lorry was proceeding from Mudhukulathoor in Ramanathapuram district to Tirunelveli when the accident occurred. The deceased were Chandrasekar, C. Muthupriya (12), his daughter, C. Kumar (9) his son and M. Madesh (5), a neighbour’s child.

The other two victims who suffered head injuries — M. Selvalatha (15) and C. Anusiya (13) — were admitted to the Tuticorin Government Hospital. The condition of the injured was said to be critical, hospital sources said.

Angered over the fatal accident, people in the locality took to the road and demanded speed-breakers at the accident spot.

With three schools near the accident site, the agitators demanded speed-breakers to avoid any further accidents here. They also sought the removal of a TASMAC liquor shop close to the accident site.

Deputy Superintendent of Police A. Udhayakumar said a case was yet to be registered by Kulathur police. Motor Vehicle Inspector N. Fathima Parveen inspected the accident site.
