Three quacks held in Kanyakumari district

January 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - NAGERCOIL:

Three quacks were arrested in Kanyakumari district on Friday by officials of the Health department, said N. Ravindran, Joint Director, Health Services.

Mr. Ravindran told The Hindu that the officials divided into two teams conducted surprise raids across the district from early Friday morning.

“We were able to arrest three quacks, two in Nagercoil and one in Marthandam.’’ As the information about the raid spread like wild fire, quacks went underground. The raids will continue for another few days.

Mr. Ravindran said that the department had identified over 100 quacks, including nurses, compounders and illiterates practising in the district and they would be weeded out soon.

One Chima Biswas from North India practising for over 20 years in Marthandam in the name of Beefra Clinic was arrested.

Two other quacks arrested in Nagercoil were Batra of Bathra Clinic and Rajan of Rajaraji Hospital, he added. Even though the department and the police took action against quacks frequently, they restarted their clinics in other names in a changed location after their punishment period, lamented Mr. Ravindran.

Cases will be registered under the Indian Medical Council Act. The arrested were handed over to the police in Nagercoil and Marthandam.
