Innovations need to be society oriented: Katoch
NAGPUR: Innovations have always been there. But they are more meaningful if they are society oriented. Every student engaged in research must ensure that the work leaves some imprints on the community. In India, research should be specifically judged on the basis of its impact on society, said Dr VM Katoch on Friday.
Dr Katoch, secretary of department of health research (DHR) and director general of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), was speaking at the valedictory function of the three-day state-level interuniversity research convention hosted by city-based Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (Mafsu).
All teachers and officials encouraged students to maintain a healthy research environment in their universities.
Dr Katoch further said, “Another important component of research is ‘originality’. Unfortunately, most researchers blindly follow the West,” he said.
Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of Department of Atomic Energy, stressed on differentiating between problems that should be solved and that need to be solved. Currently chairman of Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission (RGSTC) of state and a chair professor at BARC in Mumbai, Kakodkar stressed on applied research and developing path-breaking solutions for the society.
Mafsu vice-chancellor AK Misra said it was a matter of pride that girls have won more awards than boys at the convention. He told students to strive hard for development.
