Analyzing how Yahoo’s products are faring

What you can expect from Yahoo's 4Q14 earnings (Part 7 of 14)

(Continued from Part 6)

Yahoo’s products

During the conference call to announce its 3Q14 earnings, management mentioned that Yahoo’s products are doing well. The products have new and improved features. Also, there’s a new look across various products—like the new Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Screen, the digital magazines, Yahoo News Digest, the Yahoo Weather app, and new versions of Flickr for mobile and PC.

In the last quarter, the company launched Yahoo Style—led by industry maven Joe Zee. It also launched Yahoo Health and Yahoo DIY—a digital do-it-yourself magazine. In the third quarter, Yahoo Live broadcasted more than 90 live concerts to millions of users through its exclusive partnership with Live Nation.

Yahoo also launched Yahoo Recommends. It brought the company’s leading personalization technology to leading publishers.

One app among the top ten mobile apps

Despite Yahoo’s efforts to launch new products, it only has one app among the top ten apps used by mobile users. A number of Google (GOOG) (GOOGL) apps rank next in terms of unique visits. These include YouTube, Google Play, Google Search, Google Maps, and Gmail. Meanwhile, Apple’s (AAPL) Maps app and Yahoo’s (YHOO) Finance app are way behind in the list. They’re ranked ninth and tenth.

This shows that Yahoo needs to also focus on increasing user engagement in addition to launching new products.
