As more and more people are adopting eco-friendly habits and a greener lifestyle, others are taking cue. Residents of Bandra have started recycling and reusing garbage with the help of composting techniques.
Three areas in Bandra have adopted composting, which converts garbage into rich manure. With the expertise and guidance provided by Minal Katarnavre of Force NGO, composting bins have been set up at the Carter Road promenade, H/West ward office and H/West's SWM chowki near National College.

The section on Carter Road promenade, which is near the Shirley Rajan Gaothan area, has several slums in its vicinity. The slum dwellers dump garbage on the footpath, which b becomes a huge heap of foul-smelling trash by the end of the day.

Neera Sehgal, trustee at KBS Foundation, shares, "KBS Foundation has installed the composting bins and they are managed by the workers provided by the NGO Force. The idea of putting the bins at Carter Road has proven to be useful in two ways. First, the garbage that used to lie on the footpath, is now cleared as it goes directly in these bins. Second, the entire garbage is converted into rich manure after a period of few months. The manure can be used for gardening."

H/west ward's SWM department is known to be extremely active when it comes to adopting eco-friendliness. Katarnavre shares, "I have been doing this for the longest time as my NGO is associated with the MCGM wards. We installed the composting bins at the SWM chowki near National College, and recently the bins have also been installed at the H/west ward office. The trash collected at the ward canteen is huge, which is then put in the composting bins. This method is proving to be quite productive. Moreover, it doesn't leave any odour."

Chandrakant Tambe, Junior Overseer, SWM department, H/West ward, shares, "It's been a week now that the composting bins have been installed. This idea is working well and is supported by all." The idea is also supported and praised by Vijay Kamble, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, H/West ward, who was unavailable for comment.

Composting bins at the Carter Road Promenade have also helped in generating employment, as manpower is required to lift the garbage and dump IT in the bins.
