Koel Mallick and Sayantika Banerjee on their love for Mithun Chakraborty and the prankster called Dev
Who said two heroines can't be friends? When Koel Mallick and Sayantika Banerjee came together for Ravi Kinagi's Herogiri produced by Surinder Films they were like a house on fire. The film also stars Dev and Mithun Chakraborty and that only upped the fun quotient. A movie on how a father pushes his son to get hitched, it spelt entertainment for the cast from the word go.
On a wintery afternoon over coffee, the actresses spoke about life -both reel and real. Excerpts:
Tell us about the didigiri the two of you've shown so far.
Koel Mallick (KM): I am too obedient and never got a chance to show either herogiri or didigiri! Being part of films and taking on different characters is itself herogiri/didigiri for me. I am an introvert and want to be away from the limelight but there's no escaping it. The love that the audience has showered on me is the greatest blessing. My character Maria, in Herogiri, is just the opposite of what I am in real life. She is totally crazy , doesn't think twice about what she does and never repents. She is up to wrong stuff, but doesn't care a bit. She lives in the present...
Sayantika Banerjee (SB): I wish I could show some didigiri or herogiri, but never got a chance. I remember beating up school friends in an act of mischief, but that was it! However, my character Nandini, a strong-willed doctor, does a lot of herogiri in the film. Nandini stands up for justice selflessly and that's what makes her different. Nandini's personality is something I adore; it's a character I've never played before.

With Dev around on the sets, it is always good fun.Did he play a lot of pranks?
KM: Dev is a big prankster. And one doesn't even know what he is up to. He would tell us absurd things about Mithunda and when Dada would look, he used to say, 'How can you talk like this about Mithunda, Koel? Shame.' And before I could explain myself, Mithunda would say in his signature style, 'Koel, I never expected this from you. Anyway.' Can you imagine (laughs)! With Dev around, it is always more fun and less work. I've lost count of the number of films we have done together.

SB: Dev would crack jokes and I would burst into peals of laughter. But on seeing Ravi sir, he would get busy with the script. And I would get caught giggling! In fact, Ravi sir used to tell me, 'See, Dev is going through his script. Why don't you do the same instead of distracting him and the crew?' As soon as he would leave, Dev used to wink and say, 'Did Raviji scold you? Are you crying? You want a lollipop?' And I used to be mad at him! But I must admit, despite Dev's stardom, he is extremely accommodative and always goes the extra mile to help his co-stars.
KM: Let me share a secret: Sayantika is Mithunda's blue-eyed girl and no one was supposed to sit beside him other than her. He used to lovingly call her Sayu... (Koel shows how Mithunda would address Sayantika) Once Dev sat beside her by mistake and Mithunda asked him to sit elsewhere! (Laughs) Dev actually apologized to him!
IN PICS: Dev shoots for action sequence himself
SB: Mithunda is a darling and I am in love with him.He is a child who refuses to grow up. He too can crack jokes with a straight face. He used to share his past experiences with us.
KM: From Mrigayaa to OMG -Oh My God, he has been there, done that. And what a range he has as an actor! Kudos to Mithunda and I admire the way he remains grounded despite his popularity. I was awestruck when I shook a leg with him in the song, Panga.

In Herogiri, you two worked together for the first time. Were there catfights?
KM: Sayantika and I fought like tigers (laughs out loud)! We are all here to work and deliver a good film, which the audience will enjoy; why should one fight? I feel Sayantika did a brilliant job in this film and she looked like a diva in the song, Ke tui bol.
SB: Koel is a star, but she never let me feel that on the sets. She watched the song Ke tui bol and called me to say how I looked like a mermaid! She said this was my best performance till date! I also loved the way Koel danced to Janeja janeman...
Herogiri, produced by Surinder Films, releases today.
