One of the favourites to win the Australian Open, Roger Federer was knocked out of the competition in the third round by Italian Andreas Seppi in four sets.

Sepp beat Federer in four sets with the score reading 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 , thus marking the biggest upset of the competition.

The Swiss Ace had been seeded second in the competition after finishing the year on a high and also winning the Brisbane International earlier in the year, prior to his first Grand Slam.

Another Australian Open favourite, Scot Andy Murray won his match against Joao Sousa in straight sets6-1, 6-1, 7-5.

It was a good day for the 10th seed of the competition, Grigor Dimitrov as well, who defeated Marcos Baghdatis in a tough five set match. The score read 4-6, 6-3, 3-6,6-3 and 6-3 and Dimitrov will now face Murray in the fourth round.

Dimitrov did concede that the match was a tough one against Baghdatis.

"Yeah. Where should I start from? Tough game. I mean, obviously it was a tough game for me," he said. "Didn't really feel comfortable on the court. Thought Marcos was playing dominating tennis early on in the match. I wasn't really able to turn things around as fast as I wanted to.

"I felt quite good physically, which was I think the best sign for me today. I'm not going to hide my excitement of winning the match because it meant a lot to me.

"To be able to play three and a half hours and win 6-3 in the fifth and feelin really good after the match physically, that says a lot for me. Just getting ready for the next one."

Tomas Berdych also won his match against Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, which has helped him progress to the fourth round of the competition.

The day could not have got any worse, though, for the Indians in action with Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna ousted from the men's doubles and Sania Mirza exiting the women's doubles.

The second seed in the women's doubles, the pairing of Sania Mirza-Su-Wei Hsieh were stunned by Gabriela Dabrowski and Alicja Rosolska 7-6, 6-4 in the second round.

Leander Paes, who had teamed up with Raven Klaseen, lost in three sets to the Italian pairing of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini.

Rohan Bopanna, who was paired with Daniel Nestor, also crashed out of the competition in the men's doubles, losing to Max Miryni and Feliciano Lopez in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
