Roop Kumar and Sunali Rathod release album after five years
Much to the delight of music connoisseurs, singing duo Roop Kumar Rathod and his wife Sunali Rathod are back after a gap of five years! The album marks their 25 years of togetherness in music. The singers will release their new album, Zikr Tera digitally on 24th January 2015. The album is a compilation of eight songs with shayaris handpicked over the past 15 years!
The album is a tribute to the late ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, who was undoubtedly the torchbearer for the ghazal genre.
Remembering him, Roop Kumar Rathod says, “This album is our tribute to the legendary duo of Jagjit and Chitra Singh whose contribution is matchless to the world of ghazals. Zikr Tera also signifies that we are talking about him and his simple yet heart touching songs that have regaled several hundreds.”

With over 25 albums to their credit, this will be the first time the duo will be releasing their album independently rather than with a music label. Says Sunali Rathod, “Earlier, the companies spent lakhs on creation, promotions and videos but today they no longer want to work on non-film projects. They don’t find it viable to do a ghazal album and don’t give the thrust needed for promotion and monetizing the album. Also, we have to give away all the rights of the album to the labels and now, we wanted to retain our rights.”

Through Zikr Tera, The Rathods have tried to select simple yet poignant poetry that is sure to touch many hearts. The intent is to give ghazals the much needed push as it has unfortunately taken a backseat. Roop Kumar believes that ghazals will make a comeback. “The early 80s were a golden era for ghazals, we saw ghazal based songs in films but slowly it disappeared. It’s been over 20 years and now it’s about time we revive ghazals.”
