Beatriz Corrales became the first big name to fall in the $120,000 Syed Modi International India Masters badminton tournament even as most of the seeded players advanced to the quarterfinals with ease.

The fifth seed Spaniard went down to unseeded Arundhati Pantawane 22-20, 22-20 to crash out in the second round on Thursday. Second seed and World Champion Carolina Marin too struggled, dropping a game before getting past unseeded Tanvi Lad 21-23, 21-19, 21-6.

Among the men, seventh seed Sourabh Varma was upset by 10th seeded Zi Liang Derek Wong of Singapore 16-21, 21-17, 21-16 while the other top seven seeds advanced to the last-eight stage.

Meanwhile, the big Indian names registered easy win as Saina Nehwal — who rose to third in the world in the latest BWF rankings released on Thursday — P.V. Sindhu, P. Kashyap and K. Srikanth wrapped up their games easily.
