The RCMP investigation into a Tuesday morning crash near Balzac which prompted the closure of Highway 2 for several hours has a Calgary driver facing a Careless Driving charge.

At approximately 4:00 a.m., January 20, 2015, RCMP officers responded to reports of a single vehicle rollover near the CrossIron Drive overpass.

According to RCMP, a southbound tanker trailer, transporting 35,000 litres of gasoline, left the road and toppled into the centre median. An estimated 25,000 litres spilled into the median and neighbouring marsh.

All lanes of the QEII reopened to traffic by 2:00 a.m. Wednesday.

A 59-year-old man from Calgary, the lone occupant of the truck, has been charged with Careless Driving under the Traffic Safety Act. RCMP have not released the identity of the driver.
