Metacritic's 6th Annual Movie Studio Report Card

Ranking the performance of film studios in 2014

No, our look back at the best and worst of 2014 isn't quite complete. After revealing the year's best-reviewed movies, we have one more bit of data to get through: our annual evaluation of movie studio performance.

For the sixth straight year, we have examined both the box office performance and overall film quality of the six-ish major studios and a few dozen of the larger "indie" distributors in an attempt to determine the best and worst studios of the past year.

This year's rankings begin below. Our previous Movie Studio Report Cards are available here: 2014 (for films released in 2013) | 2013 | 2012 | 2011 | 2010

Which studios released the best films?

To compile these annual report cards, we calculate the average Metascores for each individual distributor, and then assign a letter grade to enable easy comparisons between studios. We do grade on a curve: the highest average Metascores get A's, the lowest F's, and everything else slots in between.

Grades for the studios' 2014 films are listed below, and once again the major studios are not the best "students." A year ago, Paramount was the best major distributor with an average Metascore of 58.4 (good for a C+ last year), and this year Disney leads the pack with a slightly better 59.8 and a B– grade. The latter studio and Fox were actually the only two majors that saw their Metascore averages rise from 2013 to 2014. For the second straight year, no major studio has received an average Metascore of 61 or higher (the cutoff we use to indicate generally positive reviews from critics).

The top grades, as always, belong to the smaller specialty distributors, though this year's leader, GKIDS, is new to our rankings. That New York-based distributor of high-quality, mostly animated fare collected the highest average Metascore in our six years of compiling these rankings. (The previous record, 76.2 was set a year ago by Cinema Guild. That company actually averaged a stunning 83.5 for its 2014 slate, but released one film too few to qualify for this year's rankings.)

Results for all studios (with at least seven scored films) are below.

* Re-releases, and films with fewer than four reviews (the minimum required to calculate a Metascore) are excluded.
Only studios with 7 or more scored American releases during 2014 are included. A few additional distributors did release at least 7 films in the U.S. last year but are not listed because some or all of their films do not have Metascores (these were mainly films in foreign languages).

The Metascore is a weighted average of scores from top professional critics, on a scale from 0 (bad) to 100 (good). The Average Metascore is a simple mean of all Metascores for the studio's 2014 releases. # Great indicates the total number of 2014 films with Metascores of 81 or higher. % Good represents positively-reviewed films (Metascore of 61 or higher). % So-So represents films receiving mixed or average reviews (40-60). % Bad represents negatively-reviewed films (39 or lower). Note that percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding. The Quality Grade is an overall quality assessment assigned by Metacritic to represent the studio's output for the year in comparison to its peers. All scores in this report are from January 19, 2015.

Details by individual studio

Below are the films released by each individual distributor during 2014, ordered by average Metascore (beginning the the majors as a group and then moving on to the smaller companies). Only those distributors with at least seven scored releases are included. Note that some films listed below do not have any reported box office grosses; these films were primarily released on VOD in the U.S. (and while all of them did also play in at least one theater for at least one screening, there wasn't enough of a theatrical release to have box office figures reported).

Though Disney's total grosses were down slightly compared to the prior year, 2014 was still a fairly good year for the studio. Finishing second in domestic market share and third globally, Disney once again led all studios in average gross per film, though 2014's figure of about $125 million (domestically) per wide release is a far cry from 2013's $170 million. Disney also had four of the year's 10 highest-grossing films (in North America), including 2014's #1 movie in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Disney's films, as a group, were also slightly better last year than in 2013. They were also better than those of any other major studio, leaving Disney the only one of the seven majors to receive a grade higher than a C. Interestingly, Disney's three Marvel-related films (including Big Hero 6, which is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) were not just the studio's highest-grossing releases, but were also the highest-scoring Disney films with critics.

With two Pixar films (Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur), an Avengers sequel, Brad Bird's Tomorrowland, and the first of many planned Star Wars sequels on the calendar for the year ahead, 2015 should easily be Disney's biggest year to date. (And we didn't even mention Ant-Man or a Steven Spielberg thriller written by the Coen brothers).

* % Good = percentage of all 2014 releases receiving positive reviews from critics (with a score of 61 or higher).

Among the major studios, Paramount was the best of a mediocre bunch in 2013, and came close again in 2014, finishing with a higher Metascore than any major distributor not named Disney. Paramount's highest-scoring 2014 film, Selma, was one of just two best picture nominees to come from one of the majors, and Paramount finished with 7 Oscar nominations in all (even with Selma's snubs in other categories).

Still, nearly two-thirds of the studio's films failed to win over critics, and Paramount's average Metascore declined a bit compared to the year before. Not helping matters was the release of three critical misfires in 2014 compared to just one in 2013.

The most surprising of those duds was the Jason Reitman-directed Men, Women & Children. That film was also the year's biggest box office flop from a major studio, boasting one of the worst opening weekends in history ($306,367) for a nationwide release.

As a whole, though Paramount's revenues were up slightly in 2014, the studio still placed sixth among the major distributors in domestic market share. Globally, the news was better, with Paramount's Transformers: Age Of Extinction the only film in 2014 to collect more than $1 billion worldwide.

Paramount currently has just 10 films on tap for 2015, and none seems headed to any box office or Oscar glory. The studio's best chance at a 2015 hit probably rests in the late-arriving Mission: Impossible 5 or the curiously spelled Terminator: Genisys, the best of a relatively anemic slate.

While the industry as a whole was down (with the lowest number of movie tickets sold in nearly two decades), Fox had a tremendous year financially. The studio established an all-time record (breaking a mark set by Paramount in 2011) with more than $5.5 billion in receipts worldwide. Fox had seven films surpass the $300 million mark globally (more than any other studio), led by X-Men: Days of Future Past, the fifth-highest grossing movie of 2014 worldwide.

Fox also performed well domestically—scoring its best year ever—with revenues soaring by nearly 70% compared to 2013 to lift Fox to #1 in overall market share last year (after finishing a mere 6th the previous year). And that's in spite of releasing one of 2014's biggest flops in The Pyramid.

And, a year after failing to release a single positively reviewed film, Fox released six of them—though the critics' favorite, Gone Girl, could not convert that acclaim into a best picture nomination at the Oscars. Fox managed to raise its average Metascore by over 6 points (vs. 2013) in the process.

The year ahead will bring another very large slate of films (at least 17) for Fox, though every potential quality film like new works from Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant) and David O. Russell (Joy) seems to be balanced out by likely critical duds such as yet another Alvin and the Chipmunks film. A good early test will be next month's Kingsman: The Secret Service, which could go either way with critics and the public (though early reviews are encouraging).

Was everything awesome for Warner in 2014? Not completely. The studio fell from 1st in domestic and global market share to 3rd domestically, though it placed second internationally thanks to hits like The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (#2 in worldwide grosses overall in 2014).

Warner's domestic receipts dropped 16% in 2014 even though the studio released more films than any other major. Still, many of the studio's minor flops like Jersey Boys and Horrible Bosses 2 were relatively cheap to make (and thus not necessarily flops), though Winter's Tale and the Johnny Depp sci-fi thriller Transcendence were indeed bombs.

Quality-wise, Warner's 2014 basically matched its 2013, with 39% of its films receiving positive reviews, and an average Metascore in the middle of the 50s. The studio even managed a best picture nomination, for American Sniper—a film that this week also proved to be an enormous hit, shattering January box office records. The studio received 11 Academy Award nominations in all, tops among the major distributors.

Warner again has more than 20 films lined up for 2015, which should be an interesting year for the studio, with plenty of films (Jupiter Ascending, Mad Max: Fury Road, Pan, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) that could potentially go either way with critics and with moviegoers.

Though Universal finished fifth in domestic market share, it placed just sixth globally, and had one of the biggest revenue declines last year among the major studios. Universal also was the only major studio with just one film (Neighbors) surpassing the $150 million mark domestically. The result, perversely, was the studio's most profitable year ever, thanks to one reason: all of its 2014 films were cheap to make.

They also weren't very good. Just three of the studio's 15 films received positive reviews from critics (and one of those, only by a nose), putting Universal in the bottom half among the major distributors in terms of quality—not surprising, given that its 2014 slate wasn't exactly deep in Oscar-worthy films. Universal also had five critical duds last year, two more than in 2013.

A new Fast & Furious movie and Jurassic World suggest that Universal will perform better at the box office in 2015, though critics could find even less to like this year.

The Interview debacle was just one of several problems for Sony in 2014. The quality of the studio's films dropped considerably for the second straight year, with the bad releases outnumbering the good by a 2:1 margin.

An Amazing Spider-Man sequel (13 points lower than the previous film), George Clooney's The Monuments Men, and a remake of Annie are among the Sony films last year that underperformed with critics. And a year after collecting 16 Oscar nominations, Sony this year received a grand total of none.

And, while the studio's domestic grosses increased a bit last year (though it remained in 4th place for the second straight year), its foreign take declined. Sony's per-film average gross trailed all major studios except for Lionsgate (arguably not even a major), and Sony had just two big worldwide hits in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 22 Jump Street.

At least we'll soon have another Mall Blart.

Ouch. Take away The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, and—well, don't do that; it wouldn't be fair.

Treated by some as a major studio (and we're counting it as one this year, mainly out of sympathy) after merging with Summit and grossing over $2 billion worldwide for two straight years, Lionsgate regressed in 2014. The studio's domestic revenues declined by nearly a third last year, with its market share tumbling from nearly 10% (good for 5th place in 2013) down to 7.1% (and 7th place). Even its biggest hit—Mockingjay—underperformed. Though it was last year's #2 movie overall (domestically), it looks like it will be the lowest-grossing film in the Hunger Games series.

And then there's that F grade. Lionsgate's average Metascore—not very good to begin with—dropped by over 10 points last year, making it the only major studio to finish with a red score (and putting it well behind the other majors, as well as almost all of the smaller studios). While many of its worst offenders were VOD-centric releases, there were still such theatrical release "gems" as The Legend of Hercules and I, Frankenstein.

Meet our #1 distributor of the year: Established by the founders of the New York International Children's Film Festival, this New York-based distributor (its name is an acronym for Guerrilla Kids International Distribution Syndicate) releases mainly animated fare, though its films are typically more sophisticated (and/or more foreign) than the kiddie films released by the majors. In 2014, critics liked everything the studio released, including a pair of surprise Oscar nominees in Song of the Sea (nominated this year) and Ernest & Célestine (nominated last year, though it didn't reach American theaters until 2014). Also nominated for an Oscar was the Studio Ghibli production The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. The making of the latter film is chronicled in the documentary The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, one of the distributor's few non-animated releases.

If a Woody Allen movie is among your year's worst releases, you're doing something right—and Sony's specialty films division did a lot right last year. Tops among the distributors targeting older audiences, Sony Pictures Classics has finished among the top three studios every single year (six in all) that we have compiled these rankings. Even with the presence of a rare outright misfire (Third Person, from Crash director Paul Haggis), SPC managed to boost its already-high average Metascore by a few points last year, thanks to widely praised films like Mr. Turner (the year's #2 drama, behind Boyhood), Leviathan (2014's best-reviewed foreign-language film), and Sundance hit Whiplash. The latter's best picture nomination is one of 18 total Academy Award nominations for the studio this year.

IFC released an astounding number of films last year: 24 more than any other distributor, and four more than IFC itself released the previous year. With that many releases, it is unsurprising that the quality varies considerably, though it almost doesn't matter when you release a film as good as Oscar best picture front-runner Boyhood, the only new film since the launch of Metacritic 15 years ago to receive a perfect 100 Metascore. Other highlights include the French drama Two Days, One Night (which earned star Marion Cotillard another Oscar nomination) and Australian horror hit The Babadook. IFC also tripled its box office receipts from the previous year—thanks again, mainly, to Boyhood.
