‘No water shortage in Salem’

The City Municipal Corporation is receiving 112 million litre per day (MLD) of water from Mettur and drinking water is supplied to residents once is every two to six days. Hence people need not fear water shortage, said Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj. A press release issued by him said that the coverage area of the corporation is 91.34 square k.m. and there are 8,31,038 residents in the city limits.

Earlier, 14 MLD was supplied through Salem – Nangavalli Water Scheme and 59 MLD through the Mettur – Salem – Attur Combined Drinking Water Scheme.

Since 73 MLD of water is insufficient to meet the water requirements during summer, the Mettur – Salem Dedicated Water Supply Scheme was being implemented in two phases at a cost of Rs. 320.54 crore.

The phase I stage was completed at a cost of Rs. 172.12 crore and trial run commenced from February 28, 2014. After handing over the Mettur – Attur water scheme works to the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD), the corporation receives 10 MLD through Nangavalli scheme and 102 MLD through the dedicated scheme. The Phase II is being implemented in three stages. Of the total 68 k.m. main pipeline to be laid, pipeline was laid for 29 k.m. and the balance to be completed soon.
