KoZhikode, Kerala 21-01-15: Mono-act prize winners (HS category) Akash Anjaney and Amrutha Varsha celebrate the victory with their father in Kozhikode on Wednesday. K_Ragesh

It was a family affair at the mono-act contest. Akash Anjaney won the boys’ contest in the high school section, while his younger sister, Amrutha Varsha, both students of Samooham High School, Ernakulam, emerged the winner in the girls’ category. The joy of their parents Kannan G. Nath and Seema Kannan, from North Paravoor, knew no bounds.

What they enacted

While Akash’s performance focussed on the solar scam, the girl staged some of the women characters in writer Sarah Joseph’s stories Muditheyyam urayunnu and Paapathara . “Akash had tasted success last year too. But, we never thought Amrutha, who attended the festival through an appeal, would make it. It’s a double delight for the family,” said the couple. The girl secured ‘A’ grade in Kuchipudi too for a song composed by her father.

Akash got ‘A’ grade in mridangam and Chakyarkoothu, events in which he was competing for the first time. “For us, art is a part of life which never ends with festivals and celebrations. As a classical dancer, I always find time to train little children,” said Ms. Kannan. Her husband, a musician, too had the same spirit, she said.
