Mazgaon businessman assaulted by two bike-borne men, robbed of Rs 10.5 lakh

The eyewitnesses have told the police that the accused duo sped off after robbery.

A Mazgaon-based businessman was allegedly assaulted and robbed of Rs 10.5 lakh by two unidentified men on Tuesday night. The police said the incident took place in Mazgaon when the businessman was returning home from work.

The Byculla police said the victim, Owais Mukadam (41), worked as a wholesale supplier of chocolate and owned Owais Provision Stores in Null Bazaar. “On Tuesday, Mukadam took Rs 10.5 lakh out of the cash register to take home. He then headed to his residence in Dockyard Road on his motorbike. When Mukadam approached the Hamza Tower building on Belvedere Road in Mazgaon, a motorbike coming from the opposite direction blocked his path. Two men then got off the bike and assaulted Mukadam with an iron rod. He suffered blows to his head and fell unconscious, after which the duo grabbed the bag in which he was carrying the cash,” the police said.

“The area where the assault and robbery took place is well lit and has residences as well as a few godowns. There were also people on the street. One eyewitness even tried to intervene, but one of the accused brandished a country-made gun and told him to back off,” said S Jayakumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone III.

He regained consciousness on Wednesday evening. “Mukadam is now conscious and stable. We have not yet been able to speak to him to corroborate statements from eyewitnesses,” Jayakumar said.

Jayakumar added that identification of the biker-borne men was difficult as they both wore helmets and the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at the spot were found to have been non functional.

The eyewitnesses have told the police that the duo sped off towards Santmitra Govindrao Parab Chowk.
