BRM Brands opens new landmark factory

Over the past few years Barbeque Rib Manufacturers (Pty) Ltd, trading as BRM Brands, has become a leader in value added meat and poultry manufacturing and distributions in South Africa, providing South Africa with top quality ribs. The popularity and growth of the brand has resulted in an exciting new expansion, the building of their new landmark factory in Mostyn Park.

Over the past 29 years the BRM Brands has grown exponentially. This growth is attributed to the increasing support from major retailers in South Africa as well as a number of well-established restaurants, and loyal consumers who visit their Factory Rib Shop in Honeydew on a regular basis. This growth has meant that the business has out grown their current factory in Honeydew.

"To keep up with current demand and to facilitate further growth it became evident that it would be necessary to expand and open up a new factory. After many years of planning, we decided that if we were going to expand we would do it in a big way and in a way that would ensure we could build on our heritage of uncompromising quality and great tasting products. The new factory is state of the art, from the actual facility, the cold rooms, the green elements and machinery, we really wanted this facility to be a showpiece for the brand and take the Company to the next level," says Jacques Talpert, Executive Director of BRM Brands.

The Mostyn Park site spans a little over 15 000m2 in total with 7500m2 under roof.

Innovation Potential

The factory will not only be able to produce BRM's current range of high quality fully cooked ribs and poultry but has the innovation potential for grilled, roasted and other further valued added products.

The factory has been designed with energy saving and green considerations. All hot water needed in the facility will be generated from power from the refrigeration plant, rain water harvesting and partial solar generation of the electrical requirements is also planned for phase 2 of the building.

BRM Brands has always been on the forefront of innovation, technology and food safety within the industry. This is evident by the brand being the first South African company certified as ISO 22 000 in 2006. ISO 22 000 is a combination of ISO 9001 (quality management system) and HACCP (hazard analysis and critical control points) and is an international quality and food management system. The company recently upgraded its certification to the now Global Food Safety Initiative benchmarked FSSC 22 000 standard which is a further extension of ISO 22 000 with even stricter requirements.

"We are incredibly excited about what the future has in store for BRM Brands. The new factory will enable us to grow, expand on product innovation and will also help us uplift the local community by creating more jobs in the area. According to employment and dependency statistics it is believed that for every one person who is employed 3 people are dependent on them. Our aim is to create at least 150 jobs over the next few years thereby impacting 450 people within our community. Giving back and helping to uplift our community has always been important to us and will continue to be one of our main priorities going forward," says Talpert.
