MANZINI – A Swazi truck driver was shocked when two female hitchhikers he had given a ride drew guns and hijacked his truck with their male companions.

The incident happened over the weekend at Heidelberg, Johannesburg, South Africa. A source close to the matter said Sibusiso Manana of Ngculwini, who works for a company in Durban, was driving the truck loaded with nickel from Durban to Johannesburg.

“When he was passing Pietermaritzburg, Manana found two female hitchhikers at about 3pm and he gave them a ride to Johannesburg where they were to be taken by a car that was said to be waiting for them since they would arrive late,” the source said. He said when they arrived at the location where the women said the car was waiting for them, they drew guns and pointed them at the driver.

“Two men emerged from the middle of nowhere and took the truck driver into a nearby bush where they tied him against a tree before searching for the truck’s tracking device which they found and threw away.
“They then drove away with the load,” the source said. He said the tracking device supplier had difficulty helping the police and the owner of the truck to locate it.

In fact, he said the supplier said they lost track of the truck after the hijackers, who are still at large, removed the device from the vehicle. Majahonkhe Nkambule, a colleague of Manana, who was also once hijacked, confirmed the incident. He said the truck that was driven by Manana has not been found as the tracking device was removed by the hijackers.

Heidelberg police confirmed the matter but said they would not divulge more information as their captain, who they identified as T Chilade, the one authorised to deal with the media, was on leave until the end of January.

Nkambule was hijacked near Warden, in the Free State Province and his truck was loaded with iron ore.
It was suspected that the hijackers cut off the air pipes that supply the engine with air used by the braking system of the truck.

Reports said the area where the incident happened was steep and the truck was moving at a slow speed, which made it  possible for hijackers to secretly ride its trailers and cut the pipes between the truck and the trailer.

He was assaulted and tied against a tree in a nearby forest where he was found by a motorist, who then called the police.
However, the hijackers failed to locate the tracking device, thus the police were able to track it down and it was found the following day moving towards Mozambique through an informal crossing point.
