Tomorrow Daily 115: 3D-printed heart models, Super Mario AI, Fibonacci sculptures and more

Culture
On today's show, how 3D printing saved a little girl's life. You know Mario, from the Mario Brothers? Yep. Well, now he's alive and can think for himself, and doesn't need you to play games anymore. Oh. And some amazing Fibonacci sculptures that come to life. Whoa. It's, you know, it's gonna be a good show. Mario doesn't need me anymore. It's Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Hi Matt. I promised maximum sky punching. As long as we don't hurt each other. Let's not. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily. The best geek talk show in the known universe. Oh! Greetings, citizens of the internet, of course. I'm your host, Ashley Esqueda. Joining me once again Khail Anonymous. Still slightly infectious. Yep. But not in a good, like, enthusiasm way. Don't watch too closely. More like a bad, sick way. Yeah, its okay. I, they replaced me, and I'm, and I'm a new Kail so. Kail actually, we 3D printed him yesterday. It took a day. Its not, its not a safe thing, but yeah, I want to thank. What was his name? For Brian Bishop. Brian Bishop! Thank you for filling in haha sorry I still cant think correctly his brain isnt working quite right today but thank you brian for coming in and keeping my chair warm yeah so without further ado, we should probably hit the headlines. I know your tea is gonna keep you warm today. I just wanted, I just wanted something special. Clark. For the people that are listening to the audio podcast. That are listening? That, it's like Foley effects, it's like a rad-, old radio serial. I like it. Yeah, cuz I gave that a listen the other day, and it was, it was, it was different for sure. I'm sure it was. So. okay, so this story is a little bit similar to yesterday's first story which is about robots in hospitals. Okay. So it's technology kind of making medical care a little better. Which is my favorite, but yeah. I love all these stories and this is. Also, it's kind of been done before. Like, we've seen stories like this before. But I don't care. Because it makes me feel good on the inside. And I'm gonna talk about it. So this is a story about a little girl at the Miami Children's Hospital. And she has this situation, this condition called TAPVC or T-A-P-V-C which is,. A heart condition that'll kill you, unless, unless you get it fixed, so it's extremely dangerous. Yeah, poor little girl. But I believe it's, the heart pumps blood to the wrong places. Okay, yeah. So it's really bad, and it's they give you like weeks, or even like, days to live if you have this. so, the hospital used 3D printing technology to print out. The girl's heart. They like scanned it and then printed out. Oh my god wow. A model, an exact model of her heart and so here's the video right here. I wish they hadn't used black. I know, it's a little hard to see. The poor little girl's black heart. It's her blackened heart. So, but it's pretty incredible that they did this, and they were able to perform a surgery that hadn't been per, performed before using parts from a donor heart. So, this particular surgery, I'm assuming based on what I had read had not been performed before using parts from a donor heart. So there it is, there's a picture of it, it's a little more detailed, it's not so in shadow. But because of that surgery, super great success. Little girl's resting up. That's great so that's a little testing ground for them to test that. She's totally fine? It looks like she's ok, she's still in recovery, but she's doing ok. The doctor's feel like it went very well. But yeah. I just, I love this idea of doctors being able to and we've seen this before ->> [CROSSTALK] I was just gonna say you've seen this before. Can you give me a c, a couple of the examples- [CROSSTALK] Well we've seen, we've seen them print out things like you know, different parts of the body where they're able to look at like maybe a bone and a, a tumor. Or you know, a pu, an organ with a tumor attached to it. They say okay, here's exactly where we're gonna make that incision. They can really kind of. prepare a little bit better. Visually, they can know what they're looking for. Mm-hm. If it's the exact patient's, you know, organ or whatever it is. So for her- That makes sense. For these doctors, they were able to say, "Okay, here's the scan of this little girl's heart, and we're going to go over this, over and over and over again with the team of doctors that are going to be performing this heart surgery. So that we know exactly what we're looking for, exactly what we need to fix, without just opening her up and being like, well we've never seen her heart before. But we've seen, you know, in anatomy books, and we've seen other people's hearts, so we kind of have a good idea of what it is. But not exactly. That's very cool. I mean, it, like, obviously what we thought of the 3-D printing world. Like we're going to print anything. We'll print, you know, a leg or whatever. Yeah. We'll replace it. Yeah. But I mean this is a good, a good start for that going in that direction. It is really cool. So way to go. I just really, it makes me happy. About that little girl, yeah, way to go, that was awesome. She's going to be, it seems like she's going to be alright. And I, I would love hearing stories like that. So, okay. Meanwhile in Germany, in Tu, Tu, Tub, Tub, Tubingen? I think it's- Tubingen? Tubingen Tubingen, Germany, they are messing with the AI, they're adding AI to Mario. So- I'm concerned. Basically. Yeah, no. I'm concerned. This is, this is really interesting. So what they did was they took. Super Mario World, the Mario Games and Or super Mario dance [CROSSTALK] They added, the added some [UNKNOWN] and and used and also speech recognition. OK So they used Carnegie Mellon speech rec recognition and also added a [UNKNOWN] Mario so that now you can talk to Mario and he'll respond. Wow I like that. And also you can add emotions [LAUGH]. including hunger, curiosity. Okay. You can add, like, like, kind of, like, guilt and happiness. Somehow I feel less happy. Aww. So here, so here's some of the- How sad. Here's some of the stuff that you can do. You can ask Mario how he's doing. He'll say good. Not so good. You can tell him to be sadder. Okay. You can also,. But he can get discouraged if he can't keep making a jump like he'll get discouraged. Okay, oh and these are all the commands. Yeah. So even like, these are things you can actually say to him. Yeah. Like go to the left random direction. The one of the more, one of the more interesting things that they said was you can tell him, you can tell him that stepping on a Goomba kills the Goomba. Right. Like that, that they die and he becomes aware of the death of the Goomba otherwise. So he didn't know about it. He wouldn't have known otherwise, but now he does. If i jump on a Goomba, then it certainly dies. Well, I don't like this at all. [LAUGH] Does he, does he, is he able to get like white hot rage when toad tells him thank you for rescuing the premier princess in another castle? [COUGH] He definitely would. I would imagine like that ai Mario would like punch that toad right in the face. He'd like kick him in the throat and be like you better tell me where that princess is now. But he also gets. Here, he gets hungry. So, when he gets hungry, this is hungry- Okay. When he gets hungry, he goes and he collects coins. And when he gets curious, he explores the map more. Oh. I- A whole AI Mario. He's happy. He's sad. Looking for enemies. Sad that he kills people. Wow, that's really weird. Yeah, so I, I, you know, again, it's very cool that they were able to give ai to Mario, but I wanna the video game. I, yeah. Okay, so I have a, so, with that said, I have a hashtag today. TD aware. What video game character would you want to see play their own game? So like if you could make any video game character aware and it would play it's own game, you could just watch. And like maybe give it, teach it some stuff. Yeah. What would you want to do? Frogger. Frogger, really? I just wanna see like you would like, like you know, ultimately Frogger. Is, is the translation of our lives, you know? Like we always keep trying to like get to that goal. There's always something hitting us. So he's gonna go insane. But he's also a frog. He's extremely philosophical. Yeah. For such a simple. Yeah. Hashtag question, I like it. You know, it's an explanation of life. What about you? It is, it is. Main character wise, gosh. I think. Tetris, yeah, I know, right? [LAUGH] [CROSSTALK] A block, 100% Tetris, just wanna teach those blocks. How to just take care of themselves, cuz really at a certain point during a Tetris session, you just don't wanna deal with it anymore. So ultimately your question is, which, which character would you like to see explore being in the world that they exist in? Okay. Yeah. I would say, okay, so, I would say like Crash Bandicoot. Okay, why do you think Crash Bandicoot would be interesting? I don't know, I think it's a really good choice, like it's sort of this, or, or, I guess you, and like, Fallout? Like an open world, like Skyrim? I'd love to see, like, an AI take on something like an open world game. Now, you bring up a good point,' cause an AI in a game where there's good and bad results, where you can make a good decision and a bad decision would be really interesting. Yeah, yeah. There's a lot of possibilities here. You could do an NPC and see what they do. I like it it's almost like that story where the guys those art guys put that bot into the dark web and was like here's $100 dollars go buy stuff It scares me I knew you were going to set that up Kind of like that if you do it with open world it's A I you kind of see what it decides to do G T A how come we didn't think G T A Logan and Logan's in the butu's biting his finger blood's coming out like G T A No it's like an old it's a game shows where your screaming at the T V like everybody's screaming at it Yeah but like a hot dog vendor You idiot! at G T A just a guy saying what am I doing with my life. I don't even know what accent that is. That was a really weird accent, yeah. okay. So last story are these amazing 3D printed Fibonacci inspired sculptures. So these are 3D printed sculptures that this designer and artist named John Edmark created. And when you film them spinning and you bring the shutter speed way way down, it looks like it is animated. Wow. That is just a plain like 3D sculpture. And then it looks like it's melting into the bottom there if you notice that. And they, so they animate when they're spun under [UNKNOWN]. So in person if you were looking at them you would need a strobe light to be able to see the effect or in this case you would have to set a camera to a really short shutter speed to recreate a strobe effect. So these designs are sort of based off of the same Fibonacci sort of sequences or designs modeled after pinecones and sunflowers. It's incredible. And it looks like it's alive! It looks like it living. Which is just awesome. Like look at that one. Crazy. You an only see, one of the things I noticed if you watch it long enough as it's rotating you can see like errors in the 3D print. [LAUGH] It's not, it's not entirely perfect and specially for like this one, i particular you see like a white. Same kinda flinging around in a circle, yeah, it just looks absolutely amazing. Really, one of the things I enjoy the most about this is that the guid, Ed Mark. He release a how-to over on instructables. So, if you want to make your own, if you have a 3D printer.>> Yeah>> You want to make some of you own, so he has like a whole thing on instructabels about how to recreate these.>> That's awesome>> Its pretty great>> Yeah, that's fantastic>>It's super good. And I just, ya know, I love beautiful design and interesting things, and this really kind of. Press those buttons today. But I'm gonna let you drink some tea. We're gonna take a quick break. We'll be right back with new releases cuz it's Tuesday, I'm glad you're here. And then we're gonna have your user feedback and of course our phonetographer of the day. Don't click away, Tomorrow Daily. [FOREIGN] [LAUGH] [LAUGH] [FOREIGN] [MUSIC] Welcome back to the show. Yeah, just throw that out. We are, we are back. We have it's Tuesday. Yes. And of course, I'm glad you're here. That means it's time to spend money, yeah. Cuz, yeah, this is Kale's favorite part of the week, honestly. I think everything is his favorite part of everything. Mm-hm, tomorrow's my favorite part of the week too. But this in, this in particular is one his favorite. Parts of the show which is new releases. [MUSIC] But is it mostly games today? [CROSSTALK] We got two two games, two movies but I, I'm a little remiss because you mentioned. Same throw. We'll get to that. Okay, we'll get to that, okay. So first up, something I was very excited about, Resident Evil Remastered. So you're gonna play this? I have a story about Resident Evil, can I tell it really quick? I feel like everyone does, actually. Okay, I think everyone has a Resident Evil story. I made my Grandma rent this game for me, from a Blockbuster, when I was a kid. I was not old enough to rent the game myself, and my cousin and I thought we were so cool, renting this game, so her and I get get back to my room, we pop it in the PlayStation, and of course it's got these big eyeballs rush out like" Resident Evil", and we start playing it and it super creeps us out like right away Very scary. And as soon as those dogs jump into the windows [CROSSTALK] in that first hallway we started screaming bloody murder and we ran down the hallway and we made my grandma go get it out of the Playstation and take it back cuz it was [CROSSTALK] we were so scared. Yeah. And then a week later I made her rent it again and then I played through it and it was okay. But it was like that first experience I was like this is the. Scariest thing I've ever done in a video. It was the scariest game I'd ever played at that point. Yeah. And it was just I feel like it hardened me a little bit in a good way. Like it, it shake me up to deal with the perils of life. Yeah, that's one of the OG horror games. It's like one of the ones- Yeah. That like, scares the crap out of people. Even that loading screen with the door is like- And that script- Yeah. And that voice over is terrifying. If you really wanna tap into like that old. school way of, you know, playing video games, where they had to set camera... Original survival horror! ...couldn't really move the camera... Yeah! ...everything's slow-moving, you actually feel... Limited bullets? Limited bullets. Limited saves. You feel weak, and that, the best horror kind of game. Oh, I remember that moment where he turns, it's all remastered. It's about 20 bucks, I think. Yeah, it's cheap. It's on Playstation 4, I mean... Let us know if you try it out. I'll probably pick it up just to relive, relive the magic. Relive the magic of Resident Evil. She was almost a Jill sandwich. There's probably gonna be like one person that watches this how that gets the Jill sandwich reference. Nobody else. I always love you, Jill, the master of unlocking. Unlocking, yeah. That's one of my favorite lines from that game. And then something a little bit different, this is gonna be on 3DS, Gunman Clive. And two, this is a game I love on mobile. Ohhh, ohhh And the original one is on mobile and it has this really cute art style where its sort of flat and it looks like a living cartoon. Oh that's fantastic It's gorgeous and its really entertaining and the, I mean and in first one the gameplay would be fantastic. Really good platforming, like I, I am a big platformer fan. And it looks like this one is going to be more of the same and, and better, and it's on 3DS, so I'm sure it'll look really great, with the 3D on the new 3DS if you get one next month. But that's out now on, 3DS in eshop, so- That looks really cool. [INAUDIBLE] Looks super cute. Do you want to do saints row now or do you want to do it after movies. So Ashley forgot one of the most important [CROSSTALK] I did. I'm sorry. releases of 2015 ever, ever, ever and that Saint's Row Gat Outta Hell, and we don't have any footage for it but it's basically more from- More Saint's Row. More Saint's Row. Johnny Gat which is the leader of the Saint's. Has died and is in Hell, and it's him escaping from Hell. So he has all these like superpowers. Crazy superpowers, yeah. And of course it's [INAUDIBLE] so of course it's gonna be Insane, yeah. Crazy, there's guns. There's, there's an arm chair gun where you sit and, like, there'll all based off of the, sins, the seven sins. Oh, delightful. So there's one that's gluttony Mm-hm. Where you sit in an arm chair, and it drives you around and you shoot out of it. [LAUGH]. It's gonna be all great Alright I totally wanna play that It's gonna be great I'm gonna be live streaming it I'm sorry, I'm sorry for not including that and then we have some movies coming out this weekend. Strange Magic is coming out, it's a George Lucas creation. From the mind of George Lucas, like very anything that isn't Star Wars. So apparently, this is sort of a fairy tale that's, I guess, inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream. So if your a big Shakespeare fan, this might be something to go see. There's like a goblin, an elf. Fairies, imps. There's all kinds of misadventures. And I guess there's some, some kind of, according to the trailer, some kind of very powerful potion that it, like, people want to get their hands on. And that's sort of the- That's like gummy bear juice. Is there any like reviews out on this? That's a MacGuffin. I haven't, you know, I haven't been keeping tabs on the reviews for this. It looks amazing! It's gor, I mean their animation looks gorgeous. And it looked funny like the trailer. I was like, well that looks entertaining. If I had a kid I'd probably like take him to go see this. But I don't so. Yeah. So I probably won't see it but if you're, if you're so inclined. And it's it's a little dry for movies right now. Like January and February is usually the month where movies go to die. Yeah, because there's so many Oscar winners to watch, so. Well, that and also like, these are the two months where you don't, you're not expected to be a blockbuster or an indie darling or an Oscar favorite. So, these are where movies go to die. Speaking of which, Mortdecai comes out this weekend, which looks awful. [LAUGH] A little bit of background on Mortdecai, it was supposed to come out last year, I believe during the summer or maybe August, and and apparently from what I've heard, the studios felt that it was so terrible that they moved it to January to like, send it off to die. because... God, Johnny Depp, get it together, man! Man, I just, you know, Johnny Depp, we, I have some, I have some issues with Johnny Depp these days. Apparently this follows the, again, misadventures of this, like, degenerate aristocrat. So he plays a degenerate aristocrat who's an art dealer during the day and he's a, he's a thief at night. So, and Gwyneth Paltrow plays his wife and then I think Olivia Munn plays his side piece. There all kinds of. [CROSSTALK] Surprise! Olivia Munn's in it. And she plays somebody's side piece. [LAUGH] Oh, damn. Oh snap. So yeah. The thing is this other. I, I, you know, it looks like. [CROSSTALK] But he's got a mustache. Isn't it funny? I don't know, I'm not going to criticize. What it, ya know what it is? Its Johnny Depp playing a weirdo with, weird facial hair and I just, I, cant get behind this anymore. I'm kinda done with this. This is the sassy part of Tomorrow Daily your watching right now. I'm just a little done with Johnny Depp playing weirdos with. Facial hair who speak with strange accents. Like I just feel like he plays himself now if every movie just with a different character name and maybe costume. I don't know, Transcendence was goo, oh. No. Lone Ranger, ooh. Mm. Mm. Yeah not so good. Dark Shadow? Oh. But Pirates of Caribbean 437 was pretty solid. Pretty awful. I'm sure you're right. So terrible. So maybe we'll get some good, you know, someday, but not yet. Yeah, we're gonna have to wait a little longer, but if you want to go see a bad movie, go see Mordecai. [LAUGH] I don't know. From what I've heard. Dumb and Dumber Two's still out in theaters. You could go see a bad movie there. Yeah, maybe just, maybe go see something else. Yeah, It would be a strange matchup. Sassy part is over! Okay, sassy part's over. actually, just for us. Now it's time for you to be sassy. It's time for your user feedback. [MUSIC] Yesterday I asked you guys to send in [UNKNOWN] to tell us what you think about Amazon producing movies. And some of you guys had some very interesting things to say. Sebastian [UNKNOWN] has said if they're good movies, then great. If they're not, I don't care. Same as with the shows they're doing. Has to be good. Sebastian got a high entry bar. He's like, it better be great. Sebastian is real talk, real talk. Yeah. That is real talk. [CROSSTALK] You are not messing around. You're right. Jeff Bezos should hire you as a consultant. Whitaker, Whit wrote us and said the more content creators competing, the better the content becomes. Bring it on! Can't argue with that. Can't. Can't argue with that. Whitaker's, Whitak, Whitaker's got his stuff together. Good job. He's got his fingers on the pulse. Armen wrote to us and said, it's great, and it's the future. Finally Netflix has some competition. I do agree with that. They're covering all the important bases. Isn't here right now. They really are. They're just like boom, boom, boom, just crushing it. Checking all the boxes. Okay so what's the last one? And our last one is actually two tweets from Linh who says, totally for more studios being more modern. Would have liked simultaneous releases, but I get it. And then he wrote, but at the same time I really hope it's not another Fire Phone. And I think we all agree with you there. All right. I think they actually covered every base. Yeah I guess pretty much checked off all the boxes. I mean that's impressive. Also, They all seemed positive, which is good yeah they all seemed very positive, people were just like yeah more competition is good competition, im in, and if its bad then ill just ignore it, like i do other bad stuff it wasnt like amazons, like," 12 new movies of people kicking puppies," like theyre actually like theyre trying to actually reach out yeah theyre looking for good content. Should, should be pretty interesting. Cool. I think it'll be good. Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed everybody. Fingers crossed on Amazon Movies. And of course it's time for your very last piece of User Feedback. Our Phonetographer of The Day. James C. sent this sun setting. He took this with his Galaxy Note 4. And he said stormy S F sunset taken from higher window in Oakland California Is that cloud city? I think it is I think Lando Calrissian lives there did you see Starwars Rebels? No Lando Calrissian is in it Oh really? Yeah yeah yeah he came back but look at you can see the city like it's really cool like I really like this picture and it looks so good with the melt for legs from so far away Incredibly well done I feel like it could have been a lot granier but it I mean it's pretty detailed and it looked pretty nice in my inbox so Oh fantastic James C. Yeah High Five. Definitely my favorite viewer. Def, pretty good yeah. Sealed with a cough. If you, sealed with a cough. SWAC, but not a K. That sounds disgusting. If you want to send in your phonetogar to be, phonetography to be considered for inclusion of the show? You can email us tomorrow at cnet.com. Huge caveat here. We've had some issues with our email. I finally got that fixed today, so I haven't seen any of your emails for almost a month. I didn't realize they weren't coming through. I just thought nobody was emailing us. But I guess kale has them. Well you always say if you hate e-mail- That's what I said. Maybe people just really hated e-mail and they, they crossed over. So, but, if you want to email us that or your hashtag of the day feedback you can do that. I've been getting some of those e-mails. You get all of them. you always get on the list. They removed me for some reason. [LAUGH] Terrible. And then like we said if you absolutely hate e-mail you can find us on social media. We're TomorrowDaily on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TomorrowDailyTV on Google+ and TomorrowDaily on Tumblr. And if you're on YouTube, you know, just hanging out, kicking back, relaxing all cool and shooting some b-ball outside of school don't forget to subscribe. And then also if you're on iTunes don't forget to rate and review. Yes. I actually saw some really good reviews on there when, of the swan, remember where we saw the first swans. You missed swan hype. We had a, we had a phonetographer yesterday who did swan hype too. Oh no. Crap. Well yeah, there was a bunch of swan hype on the. Because you guys are the best. On the reviews. It's great. I can't wait to see somebody go on there, but. I know. Yeah. So, yeah, don't forget to rate and review, and don't forget to follow us on our personal Twitter accounts. I'm @ AshleyEsqueda And I'm @KhailAnonymous. Super easy. We'll be back tomorrow with a brand new docket of weird, wonderful. Tech stuff, future tech. I'm gonna be better tomorrow, hopefully. Geek pop culture, Cale will hopefully not be as scrambled egg-y in his brain, and, until then, be good humans and see you guys tomorrow. Bye. [MUSIC]
