Four feared drowned in Surpur canal

Four members of a family, including a woman, were feared drowned after being washed away in heavy current in the Narayanpur Left Bank Canal of the Upper Krishna Project near Marnal-Jogundabavi village in Surpur taluk in Yadgir district on Tuesday.

The victims, who had brought their tractor-trailer for washing before performing puja on Amavasya, fell into the swollen canal after the vehicle tumbled into the canal while making a reverse turn. The police and Fire and Emergency Services personnel lifted the tractor-trailer. The police gave the names of the victims as Gaddemma (31), Kalinga (12), Manjunath (7) and Sharanappa (28) from Ennivadagera village in Surpur taluk.

Superintendent of Police Muthuraya told The Hindu that the victims might have been swept away in the heavy current.
