Focus on hygiene in girls’ schools

Corporation has installed sanitary napkin incinerators in these schools

Stepping up its focus on hygiene and sanitation, the Madurai Corporation has installed sanitary napkin incinerators in girls’ schools.

Depending on the student strength, the size of the sanitary pad disposal machine has been decided for each school.

A large size LPG-based incinerator became operational at Kakkaipadiniyar Corporation Girls’ Higher Secondary at Chokkikulam on Tuesday.

After inaugurating the new facility, Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa and Commissioner C. Kathiravan told reporters that nine disposal machines were procured for schools at a cost of Rs 9.9 lakh. Stating that the State government was according top priority to students’ health and education, the Mayor said motivational classes were conducted on Saturdays for students to perform well in public examinations. Mr Kathiravan instructed the school authorities to motivate the students to maintain cleanliness on campus and make use of the newly installed facility.

“Safe disposal of sanitary napkins is very important and hence we have made arrangements for the incinerators in corporation schools,” he added.

The other schools provided with such incinerators on Tuesday in the first phase were E.V.R. Nagammai Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Ponmudiyar School and Manimegalai School.

M. Rajendran, Corporation Education Officer, V. Shanmugasundaram, City Health Officer (in-charge), and S. Ezhilarasi, Headmistress, Kakkaipadiniyar Corporation Girls’ Higher Secondary School, were among those present at the inaugural function.
