Vishvesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt, Udupi, opposed the Union government’s ordinance for amending the Land Acquisition Act. He was speaking to media representatives here on Tuesday.
“I don’t agree with the ordinance that empowers the government to forcibly snatch agricultural land from farmers. Acquiring agricultural land without the consent of farmers would result in shrinking of the area of farming. It would lead to diminished agricultural production and resultant food scarcity in the country,” he said. Industrial development at the cost of farmers’ interests, he added, cannot be tolerated. He warned that he would not sit quiet if the government goes ahead with amending the Act.
Terrorism
The seer said that the threat of terrorism was not confined to Hinduism alone, but to humanity at large. “The threat of terrorism is increasing at global level ,” he said. He justified pankti bedha being practiced in many temples and mutts in the State, by stating that it was not ill-intentioned, but an arrangement for vegetarians who did not wish to have food with non-vegetarians.
