Panchayat presidents trained in anti-dengue operations

January 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

Collector M. Karunakaran has urged the village panchayat presidents of the district to execute anti-dengue operations intensively to avert possible outbreak.

Inaugurating the training programme on anti-dengue operations for village panchayat heads here on Tuesday, Dr. Karunakaran said the district administration, following the spurt in sporadic dengue cases in neighbouring Rajapalayam, had initiated preventive measures such as indoor and outdoor fogging, source reduction, cleaning of garbage that caused water stagnation and consequent mosquito breeding etc.

Moreover, proper medical assistance to the affected was ensured in the government hospitals and also in Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

Since enlightening the village panchayat heads would make this exercise effective at every village, the district administration organised a one-day training programme for 255 village panchayat presidents in the first phase while the remaining 170 rural local body heads would be trained in the second phase.

“The second phase training programme will be organised at Senthil Andavar Polytechnic at Tenkasi on Wednesday (January 21),” Dr. Karunakaran said.

The Collector appealed to village panchayat presidents to ensure clearing of garbage everyday and destroy breeding of Aedis mosquito by draining out stagnant clean water.

He urged the participants to ensure construction of individual toilets in every household by availing the State and Central Government subsidy of Rs. 12,000.

‘Daily reports must’

Project Director of District Rural Development Agency H. Vijayakumar said Regional Health Officers should obtain daily reports from health officers on the anti-dengue measures implemented in their areas and details about patients.

Overhead tanks should be cleaned once in 15 days and a record in this connection should be maintained.

Chlorination of drinking water being supplied to the public should be done everyday.

Mass cleaning operations should be carried out at regular intervals and awareness created among the public for making the local bodies’ anti-dengue operations more effective, Mr. Vijayakumar also said.

Deputy Director of Public Health Dr. Ram Ganesh and his team trained the panchayat presidents on implementing anti-dengue operations in an effective manner.
