‘Baby killer’ maid tells cops she was raped by employer’s driver

The woman said that the driver had worked for her employers just for 12 days before leaving the job.

The 18-year-old maid booked by the Versova police two days ago for killing her day-old baby, has told the police she had been raped by her employer’s driver nine months ago.

Although the police have not been able to record her entire statement due to her deteriorating condition, they say the woman told them that the driver had worked for her employers just for 12 days before leaving the job and that she did not even know his full name.

The police said Tuesday they would now question her employers, who own the sixth-floor flat in the Atlantis building in Versova from where the maid is alleged to have thrown the baby out. Police plan to quiz them if they were aware about this rape and also try to get the address of the driver. “We will record the statement of the woman when she is able to talk,” said Arundhati Rane, senior police inspector of Versova police station.

On Saturday night, the police had received an anonymous call from a resident of Atlantis about the body of a baby boy lying in a pool of blood in the compound.

As part of probe, the police began questioning residents of each flat in the tower. When they reached a sixth-floor flat, they were told the owner lived elsewhere, but a young maid had been seen in the house a couple of days ago.

Festive offer

When they entered the flat, they found a young girl inside, around 18 years old, who was bleeding. When asked about her medical condition, the woman didn’t give proper replies. She was taken to Cooper Hospital for treatment. Later, they found that the girl went into labour and delivered the child in the toilet. Fearing social stigma, she allegedly threw the baby out of the bathroom’s window.

Police sources said the owner of the flat lived in another place.

“Due to blood loss, the woman is in a critical condition now. We suspect there was someone inside the house who might be involved in the murder,” said a police officer from the Versova police station.
