From her perspective as director of the Immigrant Rights and Racial Justice program at the Center for Community Change, Kica Matos will present a talk addressing “The Beloved Community,” Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for America as an integrated society promoting love, economic opportunity, social equity and justice for all. Matos has provided leadership as a community organizer and human rights advocate for a number of agencies, including Amnesty International, NAACP Legal Defense Fund and JUNTA for Progressive Action in Connecticut. The Center for Community Change is at the forefront of the nation’s immigration reform fight through its coordination of a major immigrant-rights network. Following her talk, Matos will participate in a Q&A with Smithsonian Assistant Secretary Claudine Brown. The event will also feature performances by the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir with the Savoy ( elementary school ) Players and the 2014 DC After-school Latin Dance Program winners.
