ABBOTABAD: A young woman committed suicide when the man she was allegedly in a relationship with refused to marry her, said the Abbottabad City police on Tuesday.

Cantonment police said Zaveria*, a 21-year-old resident of Mansehra district, was allegedly involved with Babar Zeb, the owner of a hotel in Abbottabad.

The police said the couple had decided to tie the knot but Zeb would procrastinate on the matter for reasons unknown. On Monday evening, Zaveria came to Zeb’s hotel and insisted that he fulfil his promise. When Zeb refused to solemnise the marriage immediately, the police said Zaveria poisoned herself with some substance they suspected she was carrying with her.

Zeb took her to Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad when her condition worsened at around 10:15pm, and she died.

According to the doctors, they flushed her stomach but were unable to revive her as she was brought to the hospital after her condition had already declined.

The victim’s autopsy report will determine the nature of the poison, said the police. Zeb, however, managed to escape arrest, they added.
