LUCKNOW: The second and last day of Lucknow University’s convocation ceremony saw jubilant toppers receive their share of gold and silver. The remaining 74 medals from the first day were conferred on toppers of various streams. Caught in controversy for the past week, Dr Chakraverti Gold Medal was also, against the tradition, handed over on the second day. Avoiding media queries, recipient Apurva Srivastava left the venue soon after receiving the disputed medal.
Mohammad Amir Mohammad Khan, the erstwhile Raja Sahab of Mehmoodabad, along with Vice Chancellor S B Nimse, felicitated the young lot.
As Shakespeare, Descartes, Faraday and the greats of mathematics, philosophy, literature and science looked over at the assembled students in graduation robes, the ceremony marked the flight of these students. Amreen Fatima who had to be honoured her Guru Devi Gold medal for the 'Best Women candidate getting a Doctorate Degree' on the first day was also handed it on Tuesday. “The honour of being the best women candidate will not hold had it not been for the support of my husband in the two years of my marriage which were crucial to my doctorate. Receiving the medal is not just a great opportunity but also a motivation for other women,” said Amreen, who completed PhD in psychology and is now working as an assistant professor in Noida.
With three gold medals clinking around her neck, Zainab Ghazali who topped her masters in sociology shared how her parents specially her mother inspire her. “My mother motivated and inspired me to work hard and secure a medal to my name. With faith in God and hard work, everything is achievable,” shared Zainab who likes to read Chetan Bhagat when not studying and will be pursuing the field of research and academics.
Chetan Bhagat seemed to top the list of favourite writers also of twin gold medalist Ashima Singh, the MBA topper. Ashima who is now looking at her goal of cracking the bank PO exam has been inspired largely by her elder sister. “Seeing my sister work with focus and diligence, I realised that even with obstacles in career, one has to keep moving forward to the goal,” said Ashima.
