A 65-year-old saint was allegedly killed by his ‘sewadaar’ (follower) in Manav Utthan Sewa Samiti camp at Kali Sadak on Magh Mela campus under the Daraganj police station late on Monday night. A case under Section 302 of the IPC was lodged in this regard. The accused is on the run.
SSP Deepak Kumar said, “The slain saint, identified as Ratneshvaranand of Saharsa (Bihar), had reached Allahabad from Mathura on Monday evening.
After taking stock of preparations for Tuesday’s bhandara he retired for the day.”
On Tuesday morning, another saint went to Ratneshvaranand’s camp for ‘daan patra’ and found his body lying in a pool of blood on the bed. He also saw a blood-stained shovel near the bed and informed the Mela police, said the SSP.
The SSP further said that on Monday night the saint had called up one of his follower Ankit to take care of him as he was tired. However, before Amit could reach saint’s camp, another follower Rajesh Gaur (22) of Kushi Nagar intercepted him and said that he would take care of the saint. He asked Amit to take a rest as Tuesday would be quite hectic.
The police said that Rajesh had a fight with another follower Umesh a few days back. The followers had informed the saint about the incident following which the latter had promised to solve the issue on reaching the camp.
On Monday evening, the saint had scolded Rajesh over the tiff and had even threatened to throw him out if he failed to mend his ways, said the police and added that an angry Rajesh later killed him in the night. A search is underway to nab the accused.
