IndiGo is king of skies with 31.8 per cent market share

Overall, domestic air traffic grew by 9.7 per cent last year compared to 2013 driven by a series of discounted ticket offers.

IndiGo, the low-cost carrier, continues its domination of Indian skies with a 31.8-per cent market share for 2014 having flown 214,25 lakh passengers during the year, according to official figures released on Monday.

Jet Airways together with its subsidiary JetLite was at the second spot with a 21.7-per cent market share carrying 146.65 lakh passengers. Government-owned Air India (AI) stood third with a market share of 18.4 per cent.

SpiceJet managed to get a 17.4-per cent share of the total domestic passenger traffic in 2014 on the back of heavy discounts during the year. The airline flew 117.40 lakh passengers during the period. Spicejet had in June pipped AI to take the second place for the month but fell back again after it ran into financial trouble and slashed its fleet sized. GoAir managed to get a 9.2-per cent of the market pie as it transported 62.02 lakh passengers in 2014.

Overall, domestic air traffic grew by 9.7 per cent last year compared to 2013 driven by a series of discounted ticket offers.

Indian carriers together carried 673.83 lakh passengers in the previous year as against 614.26 flown by them in 2013, data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.
