Nagpada man shoots at neighbour, arrested

They had disagreements regarding the ownership of a small room in Chikhalpada.

A 42-year-old man allegedly shot at another in Nagpada early on Monday morning. However, the bullet missed its intended target and the shooter injured himself while attempting to escape, the police said.

The accused, Mohammed Anwar Masiullah, a tailor living in Chikhalpada in Nagpada, had disagreements regarding the ownership of a small room in Chikhalpada with another local named Ashfaq Ansari (42).

The police said that they had resolved their differences in 2012, but the issue resurfaced on Monday.

According to the police, at 7.20 am on Monday, Masiullah allegedly called on Ansari at the latter’s home in Chikhalpada and threatened to kill him. “Masiullah then shot at Ansari with his revolver, but the shot missed and hit a wall as the two grappled with each other,” said Nandkumar Mhetar, senior inspector, Nagpada police station.

Masiullah then fled, but slipped and a hit a drainage pipe and was overpowered by Ansari with the help of locals, the police said.

Masiullah was admitted to J. J. Hospital with head injuries and is now stable, the police said. The country made revolver allegedly used the accused, as well as a knife, have been seized.

The police have charged Masiullah with attempted murder and with relevant sections of the Arms Act for using and possessing an illegal weapon. “Once he is discharged from hospital and remanded to our custody, we will find out how he acquired the firearm,” Mhetar said.
