Seahawks Patriots Super Bowl XLIX Tickets Over $4,000, $20 Less Than Day After For XLIII

This article is more than 9 years old.

The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots are heading to Glendale, Arizona. Fans of both teams are right behind them. With the matchup now set for Super Bowl XLIX, Super Bowl tickets are already in high demand on the secondary market.

Currently, the secondary market average price for Super Bowl tickets on TiqIQ is $4,066. That $20 less than the average listing price last year, the morning after. While last years NFC championship was decided by a fingertip, it was not nearly as dramatic as this years come-from-behind dramatics. Within a span of 10 minutes, travel agents and ticket sellers turned from Wisconsin to Washington State in what was the biggest Conference Championship comeback in history.

For XLIX, there will be no weather concerns like there were for XLIII. This year’s Super Bowl will be held at University of Phoenix Stadium, in 80 degree Glendale, for the second time. With a listed capacity of 63,400, University of Phoenix Stadium will be the smallest host venue over the past six seasons. It will also leave almost 10,000 fewer tickets available than last year’s Super Bowl, which could lead to increased prices for Super Bowl tickets on the secondary market.

According to TiqIQ, the most expensive Super Bowl of the past six seasons was when New England played the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis. The game was a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, when the Giants defeated the then-undefeated Patriots in one of the biggest upsets in NFL history. With that specific matchup highly anticipated, the average price for the game was $4214.53, the only Super Bowl since 2010 to have an average price exceeding $4000. Lucas Oil Stadium is also the only other venue to host the Super Bowl since 2010 with a listed capacity under 70,000.

The least expensive Super Bowl came in 2010 when the New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. The average price for the game was $2679.63, the only game since that time with an average below $3000.

This year’s get-in price for the Super Bowl is currently $1857. The most expensive get-in price for a Super Bowl since TiqIQ has kept track of data was also for Super Bowl XLVI at $2325. However, that was followed closely by Super Bowl XLV between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers at AT&T Stadium. The least expensive ticket that season was $2620.

Both of this season’s participants have some recent Super Bowl history. The Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl last season by a score of 43-8. The repeat appearance makes  Seattle the first team to make back-to--back trips to the Super Bowl since the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXIV in 2004 and 2005. The Super Bowl trip will be the third total for the Seahawks franchise. Seattle first made an appearance in Super Bowl XL in 2006, though the Seahawks lost that game 21-10.

New England has been to the Super Bowl five times since 2000, though the Patriots have been unsuccessful in winning the Lombardi Trophy in their past two trips. New England will be returning to the scene of the Super Bowl XLII upset against the Giants, which was also played at University of Phoenix Stadium in its first season of existence. While the Patriots have only missed the playoffs once over the past 12 seasons, they have not won a Super Bowl since Super Bowl XXXIX in 2004.

The Seahawks and Patriots have only met once in the Russell Wilson era for Seattle, his rookie season in 2012. Seattle hosted the Week 6 game and won with 14 unanswered points in the final seven minutes of the game after trailing 23-10. In the game, Wilson completed 16 of 27 passes for 293 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Tom Brady completed 36 of 58 attempts for 395 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Seahawks stars Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas were responsible for the two interceptions. All-time, the Seahawks and Patriots have each won eight games against each other in 16 meetings, making the Super Bowl a tiebreaker between the two franchises.

While Seattle fans would prefer a repeat of last year's Super Bowl and New England fans would hope for something resembling the AFC Championship Game against Indianapolis, signs are pointing towards a close game between the two.
