The BJP national president Amit Shah on Saturday said the appointments of Kiran Bedi and Shazia Ilmi “were for the world”, but for the party, it was the booth-level workers and the panna pramukhs who stood out as the most important cogs in the wheel. Shah was addressing a gathering of booth-level workers at Hari Nagar in West Delhi.

Recalling his days as a booth in-charge, Shah said, “It was 25 years ago… Advaniji was addressing a sammelan and I was standing in a corner as a booth in-charge. We want to win the Delhi elections through those in-charge of the booths. I have been in your position and rose through the ranks to the position of national president.”

Addressing an audience of more than 1,000 booth -level workers, Shah said each in-charge would have to ensure that his panna pramukh (one worker per list of voters) was meeting those on his list on a daily basis.

“Each panna pramukh should head out between 6 and 9 pm every day to meet his list of voters. You should walk up to your voters and greet them with ‘namaste chacha, namaste chachi, mai kaisi ho? Bhai kaise ho?’ This should be done every day and this will ensure a sure shot win for the BJP. I too will keep going out to meet voters”.

“The victory in the Lok Sabha elections has shown us what mood Delhi is in. We won in Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Haryana. Jammu and Kashmir mein bhi jhanda gaad ke aaye hai… Who is the Aam Aadmi Party to teach us what mass outreach is? We are the first party who brought about this concept. I don’t wish to talk about Kejriwal and waste my time,” the BJP president said.

Festive offer

Raising the issue of targeting ‘key voters’, Shah asked the Delhi BJP to organise a gathering comprising doctors, lawyers, professors and NGOs in every Assembly constituency.

Taking a dig at the Congress, Shah said, “We want these elections to be a model for all future elections. We want to prove how we can win as one organisation. The Congress party today is struggling even to maintain itself as an opposition party. Once, they held fort from the panchayat to Parliament. But when they began ignoring their members and new blood stopped coming in, they lost.”

Stating how new entrants joining the party was only “for the world to see”, Shah said, “Kiran Bedi and Shazia Ilmi joined the BJP two days ago and more will join. But this is for the world — for the AAP and the Congress. Modiji will come, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley will come. But, for us, it is the panna pramukh and the booth in-charge who are the most important.”
