SILCHAR: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Anjan Dutta has called upon all leaders and workers of Congress to help bring back discipline in the state unit of the party.
Addressing a meeting of party workers from Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts at Indira Bhavan, the office of the Silchar district Congress committee here on Sunday, the newly appointed APCC president said discipline was a priority for the party.

“It’s a cause for deep concern that over the years discipline in Congress has collapsed. But things will not be allowed to go on like this. Whether leaders or ministers, all will have to follow the discipline underlined by the party,” said Dutta.
“If necessary, an ordinary worker or functionary can send me letter in confidence underlining his grievance or allegation against someone. I will take necessary action,” said Dutta. Dutta said APCC would bring out a booklet about the BJP government at the Centre on doing a U-turn on issues related to the state. He said there was a distinct difference in BJP’s stand on issues prior to and after the Lok Sabha polls.
Significantly, a number of Congress leaders including PHE minister Gautam Roy, former minister and MLA (South Karimganj) Siddeq Ahmed, minister of state Ajit Singh, MLAs Rumi Nath (Barkhala) and Girindra Mallik (Dholai) were not present at the meeting. Later in the day, hundreds of supporters of public health engineering minister Gautam Roy stopped Dutta’s vehicle at Dhaleswar in Hailakandi and shouted slogans demanding that Roy should not be dropped from the ministry. Roy’s name is among eight ministers who are likely to be dropped from the ministry.
