148 sovereigns stolen

Unidentified men broke into a house in Porur and stole 148 sovereigns of gold apart from other valuables.

According to the police, the burglary took place at the independent house in Udaya Nagar when the residents were out of town celebrating Pongal. Saravannan, an IT professional, and his family members left for Pattukottai in Tanjavur district on January 13. They returned on Saturday at 6 p.m. and found the front door broken open and house ransacked.

The jewellery placed in an almirah and other valuables were missing.

Man helf for faking theft

According to the police, Purushothaman of Panamarathotti in Royapuram, lodged a compliant with the Royapuram police in April 2014, stating that his Honda Unicorn motorcycle had gone missing. A few months later, the Royapuram police issued a non-traceable certificate to him. The suspect submitted the certificate to an insurance firm and collected Rs. 64,000,

“On Friday morning, Purushothaman was travelling on the same motorcycle, but with a fake number plate. He had hidden the motorcycle,” a police officer said.

Gold jewellery, weighing around 40 sovereigns, was stolen from a house in Pallavaram on Friday night.

According to the police, the residents of the ground-floor apartment on First Avenue in Pallava Gardens, Pallavaram — Siddharthan, a retired government official, and his family — had gone to his son’s house in Thirumudivakkam on Thursday. On Saturday afternoon, one of his relatives visited the house and found the main door and the grille gate broken open. He then alerted his relatives.
