Farmers in Indervelli mandal will soon be given soil health cards containing all information about the soil in their respective fields. This will enable them and the Agriculture Department to cultivate crops, which are conducive to that type of soil.

Orientation programme organised

This was revealed by scientists from the National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSSLUP), Nagpur, at an orientation programme for farmers on land inventory held at Indervelli mandal headquarters on Saturday.

The team of scientists was led by Principal Scientist NBSSLUP Dr. S.K. Ray and other participants were soil scientists from Telangana Agriculture Department Dr. Qamar Iqbal and consultants Samad Khan and Dr. S.M. Hussain besides, Adilabad MP G. Nagesh, Khanapur legislator A. Rekha Naik and Sirpur legislator Koneru Konappa.

Texture of soils

Dr. Ray explained different aspects of texture of soils and how learning about the texture helps in deciding upon the type of crop which needs to be cultivated.

‘Need of the hour’

Talking about the survey, he also explained the use of determining soil fertility and eventual fertility sampling and mapping.

The need for determining soil fertility and texture had become a need as no new crop varieties introduced during the last decade or so produced good results.

He praised the Telangana government for being the first State to initiate soil survey.
