Johannesburg - One person has died and two others were injured when a train collided with a car at a level crossing in Stellenbosch, Metrorail said on Saturday.
All three were from the car, said spokesperson Riana Scott.
"We can confirm a collision between a train and a vehicle this morning [Saturday] at 06.24 at the Bergkelder level crossing," she said.
"According to first reports from the accident site there were three occupants in the vehicle, one reportedly succumbed on the scene. The remaining two injured were taken to Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital."
Scott said the train driver was in shock and removed from the scene.
No one on board the train was injured.
"The police's forensic team is currently on site conducting their investigation," said Scott.
Metrorail's technical teams were also at the scene and would assess it after police were done.
"They will then recover the train and repair any infrastructural damage. Buses will continue to shuttle commuters between Stellenbosch and Muldersvlei Stations until the line is declared fully operational and re-opened by the technical teams."
Metrorail's regional manager Richard Walker sent his condolences to the deceased's family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He appealed to pedestrians and drivers to exercise extreme caution when approaching level crossings.
