Ranji Trophy Round 6, Day 4: Naman Ojha comes to Madhya Pradesh's rescue

On the final day of the Round 6 of Ranji Trophy games, Swarupam Purkayastha, the off spinner from Assam, ripped through the Hyderabad batting line-up to take a rich haul of 13 wickets in the match. Rishi Dhawan, the swing bowler from Himachal, also gave a good account of his ability to generate movement in the air by snaffling five wickets. Among the batsmen, Naman Ojha stole the show with a gritty hundred to take Madhya Pradesh out of troubled waters.

Madhya Pradesh vs Karnataka, Indore

Aditya Shrivastava and Naman Ojha's fluent tons helped Madhya Pradesh draw their game against formidable foes, Karnataka. For Karnataka, Vinay Kumar and Shreyas Gopal snared one wicket each. Earlier, a scintillating 193 from Manish Pandey and a fine hundred from Gopal had given seven-time and defending champions Karnataka a huge first innings lead of 219 runs.

Brief Scores: Madhya Pradesh 303 and 277/3 (Naman Ojha 115, Shrivastava 108*; Vinay Kumar 1/17) drew with Karnataka 522 (Manish Pandey 193, S Gopal 124; Puneet Datey 4/91).

Bengal vs Jammu and Kashmir, Kolkata

Imran Haroon's patient-vigil at the crease helped Jammu and Kashmir to draw their game against Bengal. Adil Reshi and Dev Singh notched up crucial fifties to support Haroon, as they ended the fourth day's play at a respectable 219 for 2. Bengal had earlier declared at 264 for 5 to set the opposition ranks an imposing target of 337.

Brief scores: Bengal 387 and 264/5 (d) (Abhimanyu Easwaran 63, Manoj Tiwari 61; Mohammad Mudasir 2/59) drew with J&K 318 and 219 for 2 (Imran Haroon 102*; Saurasish Lahiri 1/34).

Baroda vs Railways, Delhi

The game between Baroda and Railways turned out to be a keenly-contested tussle before it ended in a draw. Baroda gained a first innings lead of 35, mainly on the back of Irfan Pathan taking three crucial wickets. In their second innings, Hardik Pandya held Baroda's innings together with a well-measured knock of 90 to take them to 240 for 5 at stumps.

Brief Scores: Baroda 298 and 240/5 (Hardik Pandya 90; Krsihnakant Upadhyay 2/46) drew with Railways 263 (Rohan Bhosale 76, M Rawat 50; Irfan Pathan 3/56).

Gujarat vs Punjab, Ahmedabad

On the back of a fine partnership between Taruwar Kohli and Uday Kaul, Punjab were able to escape with a draw against Gujarat in Ahmedabad. Gujarat had earlier skittled out Punjab for 362 to enforce the follow on. Rujul Bhatt, the off spinner, was the star of the show for Gujarat, with a five-wicket haul.

Brief scores: Gujarat 513/8 (d) drew with Punjab 362 and 120/1 (Uday Kaul 67*; Ishwar Chaudhary 1/26).

Vidarbha vs Saurashtra, Nagpur

Despite bowling out Saurashtra for a score of 309, Vidarbha didn't enforce the follow on. In their second essay, Vidarbha made 116 for 2 before the match ended in a tame draw. Akshay Wakhare was the key performer for Vidarbha as he picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings. For Sauarashtra, it was India's top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who came to the rescue with a tenacious ton.

Brief Scores: Vidarbha 583/9 (d) and 116/2 (Faiz Fazal 55; Kamlesh Makvana 1 for 26) drew with Saurashtra 309.

Himachal Pradesh vs Jharkhand, Dharamsala

On a day when the bowlers ruled the roost, it was the swing bowler, Rishi Dhawan, who shone brightly with a five-wicket haul to bowl out Jharkhand for 232. Himachal's batsmen too struggled in their second innings as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Eventually, Himachal Pradesh ended up with 91 for 6 at stumps on Day 4.

Brief Scores: Himachal Pradesh 304 and 91/6 (Rishi Dhawan 19*; Ajay Yadav 3/18) drew with Jharkhand 232 (Rameez Nemat 77; Rishi Dhawan 5/90).

Hyderabad vs Assam, Hyderabad

Off-spinner Swarupam Purkayastha took 13 wickets in the match to rip through the Hyderabad batting line-up and help the visitors to thump the hosts by an innings and 56 runs. In fact, in the second innings, Purkayastha gave plenty of headaches for Hyderabad's batsmen to snaffle eight wickets. None of the batsmen showed the application and the technique to counter Purkayastha, as the hosts folded up for just 122. Hanuma Vihari was the top-scorer for the hosts with 24.

Brief Scores: Assam 393 beat Hyderabad 215 and 122 (Hanuma Vihari 24; Swarupam Purkayastha 8/29) by an innings and 56 runs.

Goa vs Services, Delhi

Anshul Gupta and Hardik Sethi stitched a fine stand of 174 to wash away the challenge posed by Goa's bowlers. In fact, both of them went onto accrue fine hundreds. The crucial stand also helped Services to get the vital first innings lead as the game ended in a draw. Goa at stumps on Day 4 were 26 for no loss.

Brief Scores: Goa 304 and 26/0 (Amogh Desai 17*) drew with Services 381 (Hardik Sethi 132, Anshul Gupta 125; Gauresh Gawas 5 for 111).
