Bangladesh, who finished last on the points table in the Asia Cup 2014, will hope they have reasons to celebrate when they plays hosts at the ICC World Twenty20 that will allow them another shot at much needed glory that they are seeking for over several years now.
The hosts will be led by wicketkeeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim and hope to end their losing streak which started off with the series against Sri Lanka in February.
They have been clubbed with seven other minnows, who will play a qualifying round. The toppers from the two groups in the qualifying round will proceed to join eight teams in the second round - called the Super 10 series.
Here's a SWOT analysis of the Tigers:
Strengths: Playing at home should be the strength for any host, but if we look at Bangladesh's record in the series against Sri Lanka and then the Asia Cup, it doesn't hold true. An embarrassing loss against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup followed Test and ODI series defeats against the Lankans at home. But still Bangladesh will bank on home conditions to qualify for the second round and then take it one match at a time from there.
Weaknesses: Bangladesh's biggest weakness has been inconsistency. Seldom do they manage to strike as a unit and their performances are more remembered for individual brilliances from the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur, Tamim Iqbal and Sohag Gazi. They will also be fighting injury worries with key figures of Mushfiqur, Tamim, Gazi and Mashrafe Mortaza all looking to return fit after their respective injuries.
Past Performances at World Twenty20: Bangladesh's record in World Twenty20 is something to worry about as the Tigers have won only a solitary game against the West Indies in the 2007 edition and will be keen to improve their record.
2007: Bangladesh enjoyed their best year at World Twenty20 in the tournament's inaugural edition where a win over the West Indies took them to the Super 8s. But big defeats against Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan ended their campaign on an embarrassing note.
2009: Grouped along with defending champions India and Ireland in Group A, Bangladesh couldn't win a single game, going down even to the Irish team by six wickets.
2010: Another disaster was in store for the Tigers in West Indies, where the third edition was held. Bangladesh lost their group matches to Pakistan and Australia to once again bow out at the group stage.
2012: Bangladesh's record at the World Twenty20 failed to improve in 2012, where their graph went further down as they couldn't go past first stage of the tournament, this time suffering defeats against New Zealand and Pakistan.
Chances this year: The Tigers shouldn't have any problem qualifying for the second round, with Afghanistan being the only threat in a group that also has Hong Kong and Nepal.
But should they manage to qualify for the main round, they will be clubbed with Australia, India, Pakistan and West Indies; and from there, it seems difficult to see them qualifying for the semis.
