Two youths from Kamothe were run over by a trailer near Chota Khanda village on Wednesday. According to the police, Omkar Sutar, 18, and Sudeep Chowdhury, 17, were returning home from Uran around 5.30pm. Sutar was riding the bike.

"They were travelling on the JNPT bypass and Sutar was riding parallel to a trailer. The trailer brushed his bike on the right side and both of them fell. They were then run over by the trailer," said Shriram Mullemwar, senior police inspector from Kamothe police station.

Both suffered severe injuries and died on the spot. "A few fellow motorist rushed them to a nearby hospital, but their lives could not be saved. We have sent their bodies to Panvel rural hospital for postmortem and are now waiting for the reports," another police officer said.

The trailer driver – Suryakant Supekar, 40, – was arrested later in the evening. He has been booked under sections 279, 304a of the Indian Penal Code and under sections 184 and 34 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

"We take various steps for creating awareness among Navi Mumbaikars not only during the road safety week, but throughout the year. But, most of them continue to flout traffic norms, risking their lives. However, just blaming the motorists for every accident is not justifiable, as pedestrians too are responsible in many cases," said a senior traffic officer.

"We are conducting surveys on city roads on a regular basis and suggesting the NMMC and Cidco to take requisite measures for ensuring safety of the motorists as well as pedestrians. To our satisfaction, they are also supporting us in our efforts," he said.
