Teen dies after falling from Virar train, friend in ICU
18-year-old Suraj Vishwakarma, accompanying his friend to his college, slipped from the footboard.

Ateenager died fighting for his life on Thursday morning, in a Nalla Sopara hospital, after falling from a Virar local on Tuesday. His friend who also fell from the local is in a critical state in the ICU. The Virar GRP has registered a case of accidental death.

Suraj Vishwakarma (18), a first year commerce student of Munshi Premchand Vidyalaya, Nalla Sopara (E), had boarded a Virar local around 12:44 pm on Tuesday along with his friend Vishwamitra Pandey (19) to go to Pandey’s college in Virar.

Though the train was practically empty, Pandey was standing on the footboard. He lost control as the local jerked and fell on the tracks. Suraj, in an attempt to rescue Pandey, fell on the tracks as well. A patrolling RPF constable saw the duo and admitted them to Alliance Hospital, Nalla Sopara. Suraj died on Thursday around 6 am due to severe head injuries, while Pandey is battling for his life.

Krishnachand Pandey (50), father of Vishwamitra, who is in the ICU, said my son usually boards the Virar local with his group of five friends. I would warn him not to stand on the footboard. Being teenagers, there is a streak of rebellion and they do not listen to parents. Suraj would accompany Vishwamitra, after attending his college to spend time with him, he said. We are neighbours in Jagdamba Chawl in Dhanvibaug and observe festive events together, said Pandey

“I believe the group usually do dares to impress women,“ said Pandey.“ I also learnt that the group would do small pranks but I did not have the slightest clue that such acts would prove fatal. Vishwamitra is my only son and I pray that he comes out of the hospital,“ said a weeping Pandey.“ There was no need for the group to travel on footboard.“ he said further adding “I have learnt a bitter lesson and I would be strict with my son in the future.“

Nandlal Vishwakarma (49), father of the deceased, Suraj, was not available for comment, as he was busy in the funeral of his only son.

A case of accidental death has been registered and further investigations are underway. We are awaiting the post mortem report of Vishwakarma, said a Virar Government Railway official.

A Virar railway protection official, said, “Our patrolling team was on the track to check miscreants, when we saw the two boys lying on the tracks. We removed them to a safer area in about 12 minutes (the gap for the next local’s arrival) so as to not get crushed by trains approaching towards Virar. We contacted the Nalla Sopara to arrange for an ambulance since the accident doesn’t fall under our jurisdiction. We also intimated Nalla Sopara railway station. We have a State government ambulance parked in the premises, and both were rushed to Alliance Hospital, Nalla Sopara for treatment, but unfortunately on Thursday morning, Vishwakara succumbed to his injuries.
