Mandeep, Durga suffer shock defeats in boxing nationals

NAGPUR: Commonwealth Championship bronze medallist Amandeep displayed glimpses of his talent to oust Delhi's Ashish in the flyweight category in the First Men's Elite National Boxing Championship, organized by Boxing India, at the Divisional Sports Complex, Mankapur, on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Railways boxer did not waste any time taking the attack to Ashish and his lightening combinations coupled with his swift ring movement helped him gain a clear advantage.He eased off the pedal in the last two rounds, but did enough to win the bout on a unanimous decision by the judges.
However, Youth Commonwealth Games bronze medal winner Durga Rao of Services suffered a shock defeat in the pre-quarters in the second round and bowed out of the tournament.
In another upset, Asian Championship silver medallist Mandeep Jangra's campaign came to an end. Mandeep went down against Manjit Kumar of Orrisa 1-2.
Olympian Divikar Prasad of Jharkhand booked his place in the quarterfinal when he won his bout against Sagar of Chandigrah 3-0.
In the 56-kg bantam weight category, Maharashtra's Akshay Mankar knocked out Pulkit Mahender of Daman and Diu to move up.
