B.S. Yeddyurappa, MP, has underscored the need to enlighten the present generation on vachana literature.

He was speaking at a programme organised by Nolamba Veerashaiva Samaj to mark the 842nd birth anniversary of social reformer Siddarameshwara here on Wednesday.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that Basavanna, Siddarameshwara, Akka Mahadevi and other Shivasharanas had launched a crusade against the socio-economic disparities in the 12th century. They composed the vacahanas to create awareness among people on the prevailing social evils, he said.
