Popular Telugu novelist Adharapurapu Tejovathy has been selected for Spoorthi Award instituted by the Bommidala Srikrishnamurthy Foundation.

Dr. Tejovathy was chosen for her contribution to the field of education. She will be presented the award on January 18 at Sri Venkateswara Vignana Mandiram.

Beginning her career as a Lecturer in English at J.M.J College for Women, Tenali, Dr. Tejovathy was promoted as a reader at St. Joseph’s College of Education for Women before retiring from service.

It was in the field of literature and popular writing Dr. Tejovathy carved a niche for herself. She began writing short stories at the age of 12 and till date, she had written more than 100 stories and penned 12 novels in Telugu. Her first novel in Telugu Purva Sandhya Pravarthathe , was published in 1967. It won the second prize in the Ugadi novel competitions.

Writing in free verse, Tejovathy has relentlessly portrayed the problems of working women and depicted the travails of elderly people, necessitating the need to start old-age homes.

After retiring from service, Tejovathy took up the task of developing Sri Saradaniketanam, a neglected college started by freedom fighter Vunnava Lakshminarayana, his wife Lakshmibayamma and Konda Venkatappaiah for promoting the education of women.

Her latest contribution is the renovation of Saradamandiram, built with contributions from philanthropists and donations.
