The District and Sessions Court granted bail to surrendered Maoist Noor Zulfikar alias Sridhar in two cases here on Tuesday.

In one of the cases, Zulfikar was charged with illegal possession of weapons, criminal intimidation, illegal trespassing, rioting, and attempt to murder. The complainant, late Bhoja Shetty, had alleged that a group of 15 suspected Maoists illegally entered his house in Sitanadi village on May 13, 2006, pointed guns at him and threatened him. Mr. Zulfikar was one of the accused.

In another case filed at Karkala Rural police station on November 11, 2005, C.K. Harinarayana had alleged that Zulfikar along with Vikram Gowda and Hosagadde Prabha wrongfully restrained and threatened him at a reserve forest in Kadatale in Karkala taluk. A case had been registered against them under Sections 341, 323, 353, 506 (2) read with Section 34 of IPC, Sections 3 and 5 of Indian Arms Act and Section 10 (b) and 13 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

M. Shanthram Shetty, counsel for Mr. Zulfikar, said that as there was a warrant against Mr. Zulfikar, he was in judicial custody. “As both the offences are of serious nature, they will be heard in the District and Sessions Court. He is at present in a jail in Chikkamagaluru district,” Mr. Shetty said.
