Cops continue crackdown on cockfights, 3 arrested

‘We have asked people not to help anyone conduct the games in city’

Hyderabad: With law forbidding the blood sport of cockfight, organisers in city are covertly arranging it in farmhouses and other secret locations in city outskirts, ahead of Sankranti. Pet Basheerbagh, Jeedime-tla, Kushaiguda, Shamsha-bad, Keesara, and Dindigal are the current hotspots.

However, Special Operation Teams of Cyberabad are cracking down on the orga-nisers, and a three-member gang with six roosters were arrested at Rajendranagar two days ago. Cyberabad senior cops said section 9 (1) of AP Gaming Act bans cockfights.

On Sunday, a police team reached Jeedimetla on a tip off, only to realise they had been outsmarted by the cockfight organisers, who had cleverly vacated the place, leaving little evidence behind.

Sources explained, those who couldn’t make it to Krishna, West Godavari and East Godavari districts for the game, are conducting it in the city outskirts secretly.

Police say that there won’t be many organisers left in the city since most are already gone.

Lakhs of people are already headed to these districts for Sankranti, and for the cockfights, said a senior cop from Cyberabad.

Cyberabad Police Commi-ssioner C. V. Anand said that they have listed people who make rooster gaffs - the blade attached to rooster’s leg at the time of fighting and other game-related materials. “We have called and counselled them and asked them not to help anyone conduct the games in city,” he said.

Cyberabad police earlier had opened history sheets against the regular organisers to keep a watch on them.
