The DMDK on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the Sait Memorial Maternity Hospital here condemning the management for its failure to prevent the recent death of women.
The DMDK district secretary L. Krishnamoorthy alleged that the deaths occurred because of improper care provided to them and the poor facilities available at the hospital.
Action should be taken against doctors and nurses concerned. He came down hard on the doctors who were receiving salaries from the government and giving preference to their private practice.
The government should appoint experienced doctors, he said. Compensation should be given for the kin of women who died. In emergency wards at least two senior doctors should be present round the clock.
Efforts should be made to raise the standards of sanitation in the maternity hospital and the Government Headquarters hospital.
Hospital sources told The Hindu that the Operation Theatre was functioning from Thursday.
Bacterial culture tests carried out at Coimbatore on samples taken from the theatre have turned out to be negative.
Senior gynecologists from Coimbatore, Salem, Tirupur, and Erode were coming to the hospital to take care of patients.
The Citizens Forum of Ootacamund president Rohit Jain expressed the hope that all the shortcomings at the hospital would be set right immediately.
